A month later, Elizabeth was resetting Friday when suddenly she heard footsteps approaching, and she exited out of her calibrations. She hopped on the desk beside the monitor, looking out the glass windows, hoping that whoever it was wouldn't recognize that she had been tampering with Friday.
The glass doors slid open and Elizabeth looked over shoulders to see that Steve had entered. She gritted her teeth. She didn't want him to treat her like a child, as he had been doing ever since the incident in the training room.
"You're up early. What are you working on?" He asked, motioning to the monitor.
"Nothing very important. Just fixing a few technological defects in the lab." Elizabeth shrugged, still looking out over the compound.
"Well, we'll be training all day today," Steve said, still unsure of how to approach his sister.
Even though she had been living there for the entirety of the past two years, since Steve had found Bucky and Elizabeth, Elizabeth was still recovering from her years as an assassin. He didn't know what to do with her, or for her, so he just left Elizabeth alone most days. She didn't want him to mother her, but he naturally did it.
"Can I join?" Elizabeth asked, turning around on the table towards him.
Steve hesitated. He wanted her to, but the last time hadn't ended so well.
"Lizzie, I don't-" he was cut off by Elizabeth's evident upset.
"Okay, that's fine," she said, hopping down off the table and turning back to the monitor.
"I'm sorry, Lizzie."
There was no response, so Steve took his leave of her, no matter how much he wanted to stay and hug her. But right when he was stepping out the door to leave, she spoke.
"Steve?"
He turned to look at her. There was something in her eyes that he couldn't understand.
"Thank you."
He didn't understand why she said it, but he gave her a small smile anyways. She was difficult to read these days, but he knew that somewhere in her she was still the same, caring little sister he had always loved.
What he didn't know was that she was saying goodbye.
Later that night, at three in the morning, Elizabeth rose and grabbed her lightly packed backpack. She took one last look at her room in the compound before leaving and shutting the door silently behind her.
She prayed that her program had worked and that Friday was unable to notify Steve of her leaving the compound.
She stealthily made her way down the hallway and towards the main living area, where she grabbed the keys to Steve's motorcycle.
She turned around only to see Wanda looking at her, her arms crossed over her chest.
"Where do you think you're going?" She asked.
Elizabeth clenched her jaw, unwilling to tell her friend why she was leaving, but she soon gave in.
"I found him, Wanda," she whispered. "I have to go. I have to see him. I can't do this alone anymore."
