After the crazy weekend, Elizabeth was thrilled to finally have some normalcy to her life as she returned to nurses training. She had had to quit her job at the diner in order to maintain her job with the Army Nurse Corps, as she was set to deploy in a few weeks' time.
Elizabeth arrived early in the morning to work on Monday, sitting in her normal spot. She watched as girls began to file in slowly, with Sarah taking the desk beside her while giving her a once over, checking to make sure that Elizabeth was okay from the weekend.
Sarah had called Elizabeth the next morning to check in on her and had been horrified at what Elizabeth had recounted from the previous evening. She vowed to never leave her best friend alone with anyone again.
Before they could speak to each other, Mrs. Walker entered the room along with her assistant. This caused the girls to all settle down in their desks, awaiting instructions from their instructor.
They began by learning how to stitch up a patient, practicing on a dummy doll. Elizabeth's fingers were quicker than most, having spent many hours stitching Steve whenever he was bullied when they were younger.
She could feel Mrs. Walker's gaze on her as she laid down her completed stitching.
"Already done, Ms. Rogers?" She said condescendingly, walking over to her desk. She examined Elizabeth's work only to sigh as it was meticulous and well done.
"Yes, ma'am," Elizabeth replied, looking around her. Most of the girls were still working, only half-way done. Many were stitching as if they were sewing up a dress, which made Elizabeth smile to herself.
"Well done. Now, do it again. And better this time," Mrs. Walker said, ripping out Elizabeth's stitches. Elizabeth gasped, watching the strings fall into her lap.
"Yes ma'am," she said lowly, clenching her jaw. She felt the other girls looking over at her sympathetically. She lowered her head and threw herself down into her stitching.
The rest of the day was much the same. Elizabeth would finish a training task and would be told to redo it, even better than she already had. She was upset and angry at Mrs. Walker continually berating her and pushing her to do better, but Elizabeth was strong-willed, and she was focused on proving that she was the best.
At the end of the day, Elizabeth's hands were raw and she felt like screaming. She had done every task twice, if not three times. She went home in a storm, barely speaking a word to Sarah the whole time.
She slammed the door shut behind her as she entered the apartment and screamed into what she believed to be an empty apartment. She set her head against the wall, trying to calm down and control her anger.
"Whoa there, Lizzie," it was Bucky. She whirled around, trying to pull herself together as he had startled her.
"James Buchanan Barnes, what the hell are you always doing here?!" She exclaimed.
"Well, I was stopping in to tell you and Steve the news," he said, leaning against the wall next to you.
"Ugh, not now. I need a break from people," Elizabeth replied, pushing past him and into the kitchen, where she whipped out her baking bowl. Baking was her favorite way to destress from a busy day, but sometimes she went overboard.
She felt Bucky sidle up alongside her, and she sighed.
"What, Bucky? What is so-" she stopped when she saw him washing his hands and pulling out ingredients from the cupboards.
"What are we making?" He asked, reaching up and pulling out the flour. Elizabeth washed her hands beside him and thought for a moment.
"Molasses cookies and brownies," she said decidedly, going over and getting out her jar of molasses and the cocoa powder.
