Brooke looked out at the freshly mowed grass and took a deep breath in. The garden that she had seen blossom through the spring grew taller and taller after the storms and sunshine. Her girlfriend Sophie was always so busy now with her work, but she always found time after all that chaos to come outside and garden.
She put so much time in her little world that it was turning into an escape for the eyes. The woman everyone was so afraid of was now the person they looked up to. They came up to her and told her they appreciated her words on change and sympathy. They asked for tips in their own garden, and she even started a garden by the community center for people effected by abuse to go Participate in.
Brooke was so proud of her.
She always believed in her even when she probably shouldn't have.
"Pink lemonade with a lemon wedge my queen."
Taking the drink from Sophie, Brooke smiled widely and examined her beautiful tailored suit. She had worn it to a meeting today, she lived to think about her sitting in a big chair talking business with others. "Did you have a good day?"
"Amazing!" She took a sip of her Martini and wrapped her arm around the petite girls waist. "How was your first day of online college?"
"It was nice. The professors are very respectful."
Sophie stared at the brunette for a moment and smirked. She couldn't believe what she had in front of her. A whole ass woman that loved her. "Do you remember what we talked about that day in the hallway? When you ran into me?"
"Socrates."
"You know my favorite quote from him?"
Brooke tilted her head hoping for her to continue.
"Those who are the hardest to love, need it the most."
She smiled,"Because you're a bad word and I'm a little odd."
"Exactly." The blue eyes searched the hazel ones staring back at her as she tried to think of her next words.
"Maybe I just love you for your garden." Brooke joked Sipping on her lemonade.
Letting her lip curl Sophie watched the water sweat from the side of glass and flow down her finger. "Then I would plant ten more gardens."
Setting her drink down on the side of a flower bed Sophie pointed to the tree in the middle. "I planted that for you. So that all the trees on the property added up to an even number."
"I know, it's my favorite." Brooke whispered."One day it's going to be taller than all of the others right?"
When she didn't hear a response, she furrowed her eyebrows and turned around. Stunned to see the tall blonde woman on one knee. Breathing heavily and holding a blue box in her shaky hands. "Brooke?" Sophie cleared her throat and opened it showing a beautiful diamond ring waiting to be worn. "I didn't know what love was. But when I saw you for the first time, I could feel it. I was drawn to that feeling and in it I found the greatest thing that ever happened to me. You make me a better person. You teach me how to be patient and kind and I love how unique and strong you are. You have lost everything in your life, and you will probably loose more in the future. But I want to promise you right here and right now that I will always be there. That I will never leave."
Brooke let a tear roll down her cheek as her hand was taken.
"I will make a menu, so you will have the right foods, I'll protect you and take care of you. I promise to always flirt and make you feel like you're the only girl in the world. I will always put you first. And you will always keep me in line and teach me something new."
She slipped the cold ring on the warm finger. "Brooke, will you marry me?"
Trying to stop the tears, the younger girl looked at the reflective jewelry on her hand.
"You have to answer." Sophie whispered with a nervous chuckle.
"Yes! Of course I'll marry you!"
Smiling the older woman stood up and grabbed Brooke pulling her forwards to intertwine in her arms. "I love you so much baby." She held her tightly and breathed in her familiar aroma. The intoxicatingly natural smell of her hair.
Pulling away slightly Brooke looked at the ring again and smiled. "I can't believe I turned the tough old Sophie into a crying romantic."
The blonde rolled her eyes, "And I turned a girl with momma issues into a future first woman."
They smiled at each other.
"So we are getting married in a church right?"
Laughing obnoxiously Sophie took her fiancés hand as they walked down the garden. "We can get married wherever you want."
"It's no fun if you say yes!"
"but you say yes at night all time." She stopped walking and put her finger to her mouth pretending to think. "Scream it sometimes if I remember correctly."
"That's not true." Brooke whispered looking up at her seductively. "Sometimes I yell it during the day too."
Kissing her, roughly the blonde held her for dear life knowing she would never let go. The simple game of cat mouse had turned to a love story that could only be recieted by the beating of their hearts together.
