Being alone is a horrible thing, but being alone in a room with someone you love but can't converse with is even worse.
Rubbing the tired out of her eyes Sophie Davidson rubbed her thumb along the smooth hand and tried not to hit the IV that the nurse had so much trouble getting in. She watched Brooke breathe up and down slowly and she held her own mouth to cover her cries. Every moment of the day when she saw her closed eyes she wanted to cry. It came in waves that she couldn't control. She wished it was her, if she had only gone to answer the door instead of her.
Wiping the tear away and trying to suck it all back in, she wiped her hand on her pants and winced in pain from her other arm. It was securely in a sling waiting to get the stitches taken out, she didn't know how it was possible to be so close to him and come out with only a graze on her arm.
Looking up at the monitor that beeped loudly she sighed and got up slowly to push mute. It was always going off and the nurse had given her permission to silence it when it was needed.
Looking down at the petite girl who slept so soundly Mrs. Davidson pulled the blanket down and looked at the incision across her stomach. As cruel as the world was it also liked to play a suspicious game. The small town they lived in was lacking in the medical field but a surgeon from out of town had stopped by that day to pick up an organ donation. He was there when no one else could have saved her.
The nurses and doctors came often however to watch her and make sure she was ok. They were worried about her going septic or an infection occurring. They pumped drugs into her to make sure she was comfortable after the surgeries, so she was unresponsive except every couple of minutes or so.
Looking up at the clock that told her it was a new day she rested her head on the side of her lovers face, "Good Morning sweetie."
She stirred slightly, so she moved her good arm down and grabbed her hand. "Can you squeeze my hand baby?"
She did so lightly and the blonde smiled with all her teeth. "Good job." It wasn't needed to do that, but that was how she communicated with her until they decided they could lessen her pain medication. She couldn't speak because of the breathing tube, and that was hard to look at. Watching her eyes flutter for a few seconds Sophie laid her head on the beds side, "You look as beautiful as ever."
Brooke's eyes sparkled.
"I put sheets down on the couch I've been sleeping on. I know how mad at me you would be if I didn't do that."
She nodded.
"Are you tired baby?"
She nodded once again.
"Go back to sleep. I'll be right here if you need me ok." It only took a few seconds for her chest to move slowly in a rhythm, so she slowly removed her hand to not disturb her and walked to the window where she could see news vans and reporters standing outside ready for their next story. The hospital was being responsible however and not allowing anyone in except for those on a list.
"So this morning I brought you jelly filled donuts and a very very strong coffee with extra shots of an expresso."
Closing the curtain, the blonde smiled at Kellie and took the Coffee.
"You look different without a suit on." Taking a huge bite the short haired girl pulled up a chair and sat down with a big sigh.
Sipping the warm liquid Mrs. Davidson tried not to look at her clothes. She felt like she hadn't showered in weeks even though it had only been three days.
"She looks good."
"She's getting there." Sophie smiled trying to hold back the tears that tried pushing their way through again.
"The pizza guy that called the ambulance sent some things." Digging through her bag she handed over the stuffed bear.
"That's sweet."
"I also brought some bathroom stuff because girl you need some help with your hair." Finishing her donut, her eyes went wide. "I almost forgot!"
Raising an eyebrow Sophie laughed seeing the stack of cards that she put on the floor. She didn't want to read them, not right now.
"There's two new stations outside." Kellie whispered looking at the nurse who came in to check the incision. "Here's the paper."
Putting her coffee down and reading the front page header she sighed. "Why is the investigation ongoing?"
"There may be some outside involvement."
Throwing the paper to the side Sophie rubbed her eyes. "Of course."
"This isn't your fault." Kellie commented scooting herself forward and placing her hand on her distressed friends knee. "You can't blame yourself."
She didn't want to argue with her. No amount of words could chance how she felt. Everything was her fault and Brooke's beating chest was the only thing that kept her going. She didn't want to see her in pain, but she was so happy to see her feel, because if she didn't wince in pain that means she wouldn't be alive to feel.
"Ian wants to visit."
Biting her lip, the blonde bounced her leg nervously. "You'll have to ask her if she wants that."
"Is there anyone I can call for you?"
Turning towards the bright-eyed college girl Mrs. Davidson smiled sweetly. "No thank you." It was sweet of her to do everything for them. She had honestly stepped up in a way she didn't expect. It did pain her however to think she had no one else. The only one important in her life was lying in that hospital bed. "Do you think you could get me something?"
She nodded.
"Can you get some flowers? Not like the get well flowers but from a nursery?"
"Of course." Grabbing her purse Kellie hugged her friend knowing she probably didn't like it. "I'll be back in a jiffy!"
Watching the energetic woman run out she realized the room was empty once again. Drinking more of her coffee she stared at the end of the bed. She knew who else was involved, and she was ready for payback.
