Pacing back and forth Brooke glanced up at the clock. It was almost lunch time and she had heard nothing from anyone. She assumed Jerry told no one when they left last night since her father was in such a cheerful mood during breakfast but she was still worried sick. What would happen? Jerry had every reason to tell everyone their secret. What would happen to Mrs. Davidson? Not only is she a teacher, but she is a married woman. If the press got a hold of a scandal like this...Well, she didn't know what would happen.
"Who called me to the office?" Brooke finally asked irritated.
Pauline looked over her glasses with one eyebrow raised. "Honey I don't know." the cheerful ladt must have had personal problems of her own that day but Brooke didn't care.
Tightening her jaw the brunette looked at the clock again and tried listening to the ticks, but she couldn't hear over the fan. Everything was too much. She wasn't overwhelmed she was just angry.
Walking to the doorway her heart lit up seeing the familiar figure of the woman she loved storming down the hallway. Looking to see if Pauline was paying attention Brooke slipped out of the room and ran down the hall. Grabbing her hand, she pulled her, but Brooke's smile slowly disappeared as the woman turned slowly with no emotions on her face. Around her right eye a bruise was covered with make up. Only noticeable if you looked closely.
"What?"
"I-" shutting her mouth Brooke shook the odd feeling away and smiled again. "I haven't heard from you. Can we talk? What happened to your eye?"
"I don't have time."
"What's wrong?"
"I don't have time for you right now Brooke."
Taken back the young girl let go of her hands. "But-"
"Your study hall period will be in the library from now on." Turning she started walking away.
Standing there Brooke thought about going after her but she decided against it.
Mrs. Davidson stopped for a second and looked back. "I'll send your college recommendations through the mail."
Feeling her heart drop from the little strings that held it up the young girl breathed heavily listening to Her heels slowly fade as they left the school through the back doors. Was that it? Everything built up in a beautiful way just to be destroyed and left to die?
"Brooke, she's here for you!" Pauline yelled annoyed at the fact she had to get up from her desk.
Still feeling shocked and defeated the brunette made her way back to the office. She had so many questions that she didn't know where to even start. She had just realized she loved this woman but for the first time she felt what it felt like for everyone else to come into contact with the famous Sophie Davidson.
No one else was as privileged to learn about the real Mrs. Davidson. They received cold words, superior actions, and frightening stares. Brooke never did, however. When the blonde saw her, she switched. The kindness poured out of her and her words became softer. Like a soft rainfall on a newly sprouted seed the blonde melted with warmth for her.
That was the first time she felt the coldness and she wasn't ready for it.
"Brooke!"
Holding on to the door frame Brooke scrunched her eyebrows seeing Lea hold a bouquet of flowers. Feeling her old friend give her a big hug Brooke swallowed roughly and wrapped her arms around her. Lea glowed a different light. Her cheerful attitude and new wardrobe were only a taste of all the changes her friend went through.
Pushing her back and looking her up and down Brooke tried thinking of what to say.
"Do you like it?" Lea twirled showing off her nice clothes.
Brooke smiled faintly. "You look beautiful."
"I got some jobs B."
Brooke nodded. "I'm proud of you."
Biting her lip Lea knew the inevitable probably happened. Her friend had never been in a serious relationship before so to see her pick such a complicated soul for her first was hard for Lea to watch. "I brought these for you."
Taking the flowers Brooke looked over them closely. They were the same bright yellow roses that Mrs. Davidson planted along the sidewalk of her house. Smelling them, she wondered how many different colors of roses there were. She would probably read a book about flowers later.
"You look beautiful B."
She could hear her talking but her words faded as Brooke lifted her hand after feeling a prick. Looking at her finger ooze out a small drop of blood from the thorns the brunette looked up and around. Maybe it was a dream and Mrs. Davidson would be there with her little smirk and an orange band aid.
"OH B your bleeding!" Lea grabbed a tissue from the desk and wrapped it around her friends hand. "Are you OK? Do you need to sit down?"
Shaking her head Brooke laid the flowers down. "Its time for lunch."
"Let's skip lunch." Lea grabbed another tissue and wrapped her finger with the clean piece. "I want to talk to you about some things."
"I can't right now Lea- I can't."
"B, I don't know what happened but you knew it would right? I mean you never even called her by her first name."
Studying her friends face Brooke tightened her jaw.
"She was cheating on her husband with you. What would make her stop from doing the same thing to you?" Putting her hand on Brooke's face Lea got her to look into her eyes. "It's just a game to her."
Holding in her tears Brooke nodded. She couldn't argue with her anymore. Watching Pauline walk back into the main office with freshly printed papers the girls scooted away from each other.
"Let's go B. I had your dad sign you out of school. We can go hang out for the day."
Picking up her stuff the brunette followed her friend out of the building. She never imagined her dad signing her out to skip school for no reason. She never missed school unless she was sick or away. Squinting when the sun hit her face she almost couldn't hold it in. She did force her feelings back down however as Lea started talking about her new life.
Looking at the blood soaked tissue Brooke felt her heart tighten.
Everything was changing. Everyone was leaving. And it didn't seem to bother anyone else.
Looking down at her feet, she made a rhythm as they walked along the sidewalk, Staying away from any Crack she saw. Maybe she just wasn't as prepared for the real world as everyone else. Nothing seemed to bother them, and they could move on so easily. Her whole day was ruined if the stop lights turned green at the wrong time.
Maybe she was sick. Everyone always told her something was wrong with her. At first she just thought she was clean and willing to work harder but maybe they were right. She needed help. But from where? Her dad suddenly didn't understand, her friends had new lives and Mrs. Davidson. Well, she didn't know why she left or why she turned her back.
Maybe her feelings weren't real, or she decided it wasn't worth it.
Maybe the chase was over.
"Would you please go with me B?"
Realizing they were at Lea's shiny new car Brooke looked up at her friend confused. "Go where?"
"To the dance." Lea smiled and opened the passenger side. "Will you be my date?"
