Facing it

"Hold still Sophie!" said Edaline. "You're wrinkling your dress." Sophie was so nervous- she had already pulled out 3 eyelashes. She was facing all 12 coucilors, which was really nerve wracking. She had picked a brand new dress chosen by Biana, done her hair nicely, applied some makeup and even wore heels. She was super jittery, wrinkling her beautifully ironed dress.

She shuffled upstairs to the leap master. "Eternalia!" she called out. Sophie, Edaline and Grady were dragged by the light and disappeared in a flash.

They arrived in the calm streets of Eternalia where they were to meet Alden, Della, Fitz, Biana, Keefe, Dex, Kesler, Lihn and Tam by Kenric's statue. Fitz and Keefe had gone near the river to track down something Fitz dropped. Biana approached Sophie.

"You ready?" she asked. "Not really. It's now or never, right?" she replied. Biana was wearing an intricate purple and blue strapless dress with embroidered flowers. It was so big Sophie was surprised to see a jeweled shoe peek out. Her hair was in an intricate updo.

Lihn smiled softly at Sophie and wore a very simple blue dress, blue heels and had her hair in a fancy braid. So everyone had dressed for the occasion! Sophie was slightly honored. She knew her friends were supportive but she didnt expect them to look so...nice.

They talked for little while, waiting for Fitz. When he finally arrived his jaw slightly dropped. Sophie looked stunning and she was the only one not able to realize it. Fitz once again felt a wave of love and admiration wash over him. Next to him, Keefe stiffened. As they walked to the castles, Fitz realized Keefe was an Empath.

He had felt all of Fitz's emotions.

The party made their way to the castle. Sophie's palms had grown increasingly more sweaty and had to resist plucking her eyelashes due to her makeup. They entered the room used for meetings and took a seat. The melody sounded and the 12 councilors glided into the room and sat in their respective  room. The witnesses were those from the matchmaking office and a bunch of people Sophie didnt know. Probably there for the gossip...

"Hello and welcome all. We have been summoned her today due to explanations for the Unmatchable located on Sophie Elizabeth Foster-Ruewen's matchmaking scroll." Councillor Terik announced. He then went over procedures and finally announced. "Ms Foster-Ruewen, please state your case."

And so the next 3 hours were spent with eyewitnesses, family and friends's accounts and Sophie's own experience. When it had finished, a big silence lay over the room. The councillors were having a telepathic debate that lasted 10 minutes. When they came to an agreement, Councillor Oralie stood up and made an announcement. Her twinkling voice filled the room.

"Ms Foster, please come to a separate room where we can speak to you in private. Only bring 1 friend with you. Parents, friends and others, please leave the room. You may eat lunch at the restaurants in town. The verdict will be announced at 5 hours after noon. Thank you."

Sophie stood up and had all of her friends looking at her with pleading eyes, except Tam of course. She felt helpless in that situation, but had to pick the best option. "Look guys, I'm friends with you all am equally and trust you all the same. But I think this one is for my... Cognate and I. It would be smarter if anything were to happen. I hope you understand."

Lihn made a brief nod, stood up, hugged  Sophie, whispered a small "good luck", and left. Dex did about the same, Tam shook her hand, family hugged, Della and Alden as well, and she was left with Biana, Keefe and Fitz. Biana hugged Sophie tightly and whispered "you'll do great" and slowly walked out. Keefe looked down at his feet and said something Sophie totally did not expect.

"I could help you with your emotional control, you know. I've always been good at that, Foster. You know it." He looked angry. Sophie sighed. "Keefe, if I could pick 2 people I would pick you and Fitz. But this is really something for me and... him. I'm so sorry." Keefe looked away and with a tight smile hugged her stiffly and walked away with his hands in his pocket.

"Should I trade with him?" asked Fitz. "He's never been this upset before." Sophie shrugged. They started walking and Fitz grabbed her hands. "Sophie. I get this is hard. Do you want me here?" Sophie looked up at him and her brown eyes already said everything. "I need you here." She said it so simply that Fitz looked away, nodded, and said, "Ok."

They both walked off to the secluded room. The door closed behind them with a lock. The 12 councillors looked at the pair, now seated and Oralie began. "Sophie, you cant be matched because... We've always planned for you to be a Councillor. You are so powerful and we need you. So here are our terms. You either become a councilor for at least 500 years, then you can lead a normal life. Or, you can get matched now with the normal process and be pronounced a bad match. I... I'm so sorry. It wasnt my choice. I'm so sorry Sophie."  She sobbed.

Sophie's mind swam and tears began to prick her eyes. She suddenly felt light headed and fell to the ground. The last thing she heard was "Sophie! Sophie! Stay with me, please!"

Then everything went black.
