Marella, Maruca, and Eileen led her to the edge of the forest on Everglen's property and entered partially before stopping. "Here's where we blindfold you," declared Marella. Sophie was feeling sweaty and gulped. She nodded and Maruca stepped behind her to put the light fabric over her eyes. "We'll walk for a bit and once we stop we'll leave you at the glade. That's the part where we leave, with the surprise and all. Ready to walk?" Marella asked. "Uh, yeah," replied Sophie. Marella tugged her forward and Sophie walked. They walked for 154 seconds (Sophie counted) and stopped. "We're here," said Eileen, in her small voice. She heard the sound of footsteps as the girls retreated and Sophie didn't know what to do. She heard hushed whispers and then silence, footsteps scurrying away. Sophie felt creeping anxiety and didn't know whether or not to pull off the blindfold. Suddenly, someone called out. "Sophie?"
She heard footsteps and a person stepped towards her. "Fitz?" she asked meekly. She could almost hear him grin when she heard him say "yeah!". She felt him get close and he stepped behind her, pulling the blindfold off. She spun around and there he was. Fitz Vacker, looking as stunning as always. She was a bit blown away- she hadn't seen him in months after all. He looked at her with equally awed eyes, taking in how much she had grown since he first met her. He smiled and pulled her in for a hug. "Oh, Sophie," he said. "I've missed you so much." Sophie melted in his arms, a storm of butterflies in her stomach. "Me too," she replied. Being away from Fitz was like removing an arm or a leg- he was her Cognate, her crush, her best friend. He had always been there for her, even when he wasn't. The world disappeared when she was with Fitz.
He pulled back and looked at her. "You look absolutely spellbinding. I mean everything is just... wow." Sophie blushed. "I could say the same about you.." her voice trailed off. She looked around and gasped. A beautiful gazebo sat in the middle of the glade, made of marble, with an enormous chandelier that covered the ceiling. In the center lay a white couch, rose petals scattered on the floor. It was a beautiful sight to behold. Fitz grinned at her expression and held her hand daintily. "Let's go have a seat," he prodded. He pulled her up the steps and they sat down, bodies close, unable to take their eyes off of each other. After a moment of staring too long, they both looked away. Fitz turned back first, his eyes full of sincerity, and said, "Sophie, I am deeply sorry. I made terrible mistakes. I hope you can forgive me."
Sophie hated the way he looked at her, so full of emotion and hurt. She grabbed his hand and squeezed it. "It's my fault too, you know. I caused so many problems, ruined so many nice moments and relationships... I should be the one apologizing," Sophie said. Fitz looked at her with confusion. "Sophie, none of this is your fault. We all badly handled the situation, but you just read off your matchmaking list. You never said anything or did anything to cause any trouble; we were the ones who freaked out and let our emotions get in the way when we should've only been caring about you. We all know you're in a really sticky situation and we should've been there for you. I should've been there for you. Instead, I was a royal arse. I'm really, really sorry." Sophie couldn't stand to see him like this. She mustered up all of her courage and made the most nerve-wracking decision in her life.
She kissed him. Softly at first, and she could tell he was surprised, but then he kissed back. They kissed until they could no longer breathe, Sophie's arms around his neck and Fitz's around her waist. She could've stayed there forever but the finally broke apart. She smiled at him and said 3 words: "I forgive you." That was enough for Fitz- he smiled and pulled her in for another kiss. After that one, they were breathless, Sophie in Fitz's arms. He looked at her with pure joy and said the 3 words that Sophie was too afraid to say herself: "I love you. I have always loved you, since the moment I saw you." Sophie cried happy tears and hugged him. He held her there for an eternity, enjoying the peaceful silence of the glade.
It was 11 when they finally separated. They had spent the time in silence, enjoying the comfort of each other before returning to the party. Sophie sat up first, brushing off her dress. She peeked at Fitz and, noticing he was watching her, she laughed. Fitz looked at her quizzically, a half-smile on his face. He loved seeing her happy after 6 years constantly wondering and worrying that it would be her last. He took her hand and stared at her in her eyes. "Sophie Foster, I know our relationship hasn't always been simple- it's been a wild roller coaster the moment I've met you. I know what I want but I don't want to rush you, but I have to ask: Will you be my girlfriend?"
Sophie's heart stopped. Did Fitz just ask her to be his girlfriend? She was shocked. But by looking at his expression, full of hope, she knew. "Together?" she asked. "You and me?" He nodded and flashed his movie-star grin. "I mean, if you want too, there's no rush, but.." He was cut off by Sophie. "I would love to!" They leaned in and kissed, and Sophie now had birds in her stomach. Fitz was her boyfriend! They broke apart and stood up. "We should probably go back," he said, with a goofy grin on his face. "Yeah," sighed Sophie. He tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and they held hands, cognate rings hitting one another. They left the glade behind, heading back to the party, this time not alone.
Together.
