Sophie woke up with a start and immediately regretted it. Her head was pounding and she felt sweaty and damp. She was in a room, different from one she'd ever seen in the Elven world but it was nevertheless definitely a recovery room. A gadget beeped beside her and Elwin immediately ran in with a seemingly nurse behind him. His face broke into a wide grin, making him look like a mad scientist. "Nice to see you alive and well, Sophie."
"What happened?" Sophie groggily asked. "How long have I been out?" "Oh, just you almost dying again with Bullhorn screaming his head off and then we having to stabilize you and bring you to the Eternalia Hospital which was at walking distance. Otherwise, nothing much. And how did you almost die this time? Right, you spoke to the councilors. I am definitely renaming the Medical center the Sophie Foster center." He laughed. What had REALLY happened?
After a thorough checkup, Elwin allowed Grady and a sobbing Edaline into the room. "You were out for 3 days!" she had cried. Next came Alden and Della, Della being not much better, then Lihn, Tam and Dex, Tam commenting on how crazy her echo had been. Then Keefe and Biana rumbled in, shouting obscenities about the council and how it wasnt fair after all they had done for them.
And then came Fitz. He came in slowly as if afraid that he would hurt Sophie. He quietly sat down and looked at her with the pain visible in his beautiful teal eyes. "How do you feel? I'm so, so sorry Sophie. I dont know what happened. I should've been able to help, I could've done something but instead you passed out and I was so worried and..." "Fitz, you're fine. I'm fine. It's alright." she replied. Fitz sighed with relief and then did a halfhearted smile. "You've always been a fighter."
Sophie didnt know how to reply to that, so she didnt. Fitz was obviously uncomfortable being there and Sophie noticed why- she was in a thin hospital frock. "Can you pass me that sweater over there?" she asked. Fitz grabbed it and tossed it at Sophie who gently pulled it on. She then propped herself up and with a snap opened the curtains. It was midday outside and the light was so bright Sophie had to squint.
Fitz then asked a question. "Do you mind if we talk, through your mind I mean? This is obviously really awkward." He seemed nervous even saying it. She opened her mind and felt him enter.
Hey
Hey
So, what do you wanna talk about?
I dont know, I just thought it was awkward speaking out loud
So what happened to me?
Your mind kind of shut down after you heard the news. Your echo had taken over because of too much emotion
Oh
Yeah
Why were you so... emotional?
Sorry, I shouldn't have asked that
It's fine. Its just... I was so prepared for them to say it was a mistake and I was, believe it or not, kind of looking forward to it. Getting my scroll and all.
You can still... get it. I know it would be a bad match and all but... it's an option.
Sophie was confused. He almost seemed... hopeful. No, that couldn't be it. She was mixing her self up.
I dont know
I get it
Do you want to get it though?
There was a silent pause.
I kinda do
Just to see who I have. Kind of weird, huh?
