It's been 3 and a half months since Biana and Sophie had their spa date. The Foxfire school year start came and went, where Sophie finally performed beautifully (for once) as a member of the gold levels. Then, the hectic school year begun with 12 vigorous classes of many different subjects. Her more in depth training with Telepathy had started but her mind wandered and her focus was basically non-existent.
Her new professor was tough and didn't understand where the supposedly most successful prodigy's focus went. Sophie spent countless hours studying, trying to keep her grades up. She hadn't talked to Fitz or Keefe besides awkward small talk and ached to reconnect with them, but she was terrified. Both boys had been steadily working their jobs, Fitz working for the council and Keefe at a Matchmaking consulting office. She had gotten news from them and they seemed fine, but all in all had lost anything they used to have. Winter Solstice break was quickly approaching and Sophie was hopeful that she could fix things then.
It was the last day before break and Biana and Dex were celebrating with the Elite levels. Prattles were scattered around the main rooms and classes and could only be found using prodigies' different talents. "Sophie, Sophie, this way!" called Biana. Since getting her scroll, Biana had drastically changed, dating guys left and right and dumping them when they got too boring. Her excuse was that she wanted someone "fun and fashionable that I really connect with." So far, none had made the cut. "So I had a date with Byron yesterday and my goodness, what a bore. Couldn't stop talking about this human card game," she talked as they ran through the halls. "So I told him I wasn't interested and he looked really upset but I was like, so-rry you're obsessed with The magic gathering or whatever." Sophie rolled her eyes but stayed focused. They were almost done scouring the top hall for Prattles boxes and had finally arrived in the last room.
Looking around, they saw nothing but bottles of starlight, maps, and tons of telescopes. They shifted things around, looking for any sign of the signature boxes. Finally they spotted a box of wood with the prattles logo on it. "What does this mean?" said Sophie. "Looks like you need a Pyrokinetic for that," someone called out from the doorway. "Marella!" both girls cried out. She grinned and sauntered over. "Careful, wouldn't want to burn you." Since helping them alienate the Neverseen, the council removed the ban on Pyrokinetics and had let her train extensively with Fintan, who had gone through a prison transfer to a protected location inside Foxfire.
Expertly maneuvering the flames, Marella burned the wooden box only to snatch the Prattles and sprint away, grinning. "No fair!" whined Biana. "That was ours," she pouted. Sophie laughed. "It's fine. We have enough anyway. You think 36 boxes will suffice?" Biana fake pouted but smiled eventually. Together, they walked arm in arm back to their dorms, where their packed trunks waited. Biana sighed. "I don't really want to leave, you know." Sophie looked up, surprised. "What do you mean?" she asked. "Whenever I go home, Dad is overworked, Mom is always busy doing something to keep her mind off of Alvar's death, and Fitz is a sullen jerk. Here, I have my friends, my catastrophic dates, and the classes that I love. What's more to ask?" She looked close to tears. Sophie walked over and hugged her best friend. "It'll be ok. We'll meet up every day and our families will do a gift exchange together. Don't worry. It'll go by quickly." Biana sighed and nodded.
Together, they pulled off their Gold cloaks and folded them into their under bed storage. Taking a look around, Sophie realized how much she loved Foxfire and the elite levels. She shared a beautiful dorm with Biana and a few other girls, outfitted with matching beds in a simple grey and white theme. The beds were on the left behind a rounded door, in a circular formation to fit the room, outfitted with flowy curtains for privacy. Under bed storage provided more space and a table in the center of the room was used for weekly makeovers or aggressive card games. The main room was their study and hang out place, outfitted with bookshelves, couches, poofy armchairs, study tables, and giant windows overlooking a balcony with views of the school grounds. On the right, behind another rounded door, lay the huge bathroom with 5 sinks and several toilets and bathtubs. All in all, it was their safe place. Despite this, Sophie was ready to go home. She missed her parents and the Alicorns.
Grabbing Iggy's cage and levitating her trunk, Sophie walked to the main room of the Gold levels. Students were saying goodbye, leaving on the many Leap masters placed in the back of the room. Someone called out her name. She turned to find Dex, weaving through the masses of people to find her. "Hey," he said, out of breath. Dex had gone through a last minute growth spurt and was now a whole lot taller than Sophie. "Ready to go home?" she asked. "Well... am I ready to deal with the triplets? No. Am I looking forward to testing some new tricks on them? Definitely." He grinned, dimples appearing on his cheeks. Sophie laughed. "You're coming to the Solstice celebration at my place, right?" she asked. "Definitely." They hugged goodbye and Sophie dragged her trunk to one of the leap masters. She called out Havenfield and after a final look around lept home.
