Sophie woke up to a spot of sunshine shining right in her face. She squinted as she opened her eyes and noticed that she had never closed her curtains. The sky was ablaze with light as the sun reigned over the pastures, visibly having had risen a few hours ago. Sophie groaned. Her head was pounding and her throat was dry. She rolled out of bed and gingerly walked to the bathroom to grab some water. Not bothering to look in the mirror, she swallowed some water, almost choked, and went down the stairs and into the kitchen. "Sophie, how are y- oh boy," started Edaline. Grady burst out laughing and Sophie looked up, confused. "What?" she asked. Grady was tearing up and Edaline was trying to muffle her giggles. Sophie rolled her eyes and walked to the nearby mirror. When she saw her reflection, she gasped in horror. Her hair was matted and knotted, a stray bobby pin hanging on for dear life on the edge of her head. She hadn't quite removed all of her makeup and her mascara had dripped. To top it off, she had a stain of drool on the corner of her pajama shirt. She was a mess.
Sighing, Sophie sat down for breakfast. The headache had returned and she scarfed down her food, pausing now and then to glare at Grady or Edaline who still couldn't contain their laughter. "So," Grady started, clearing his throat. "What do you want to do today? It's already 1 and..." "IT'S ONE O'CLOCK?" Sophie belted out. Edaline nodded. "You went to sleep at 6 am, Sophie. You were going to be exhausted," she exclaimed. Sophie groaned again. To sum up the start of the day, she woke up looking like a mess with a pounding head, at 1 o'clock, and she still had a stack of solstice break homework that she was hoping to complete ASAP. Grumbling, she thanked her parents for breakfast and trudged up the stairs. She pulled out a warm blue tunic and grey leggings, not bothering to care if she looked good. When she passed by Vertina, the mirror cackled at how she looked. "Oh, boy, you sure look like a mess!" she exclaimed. "Yeah, I noticed," said Sophie. The mirror kept on laughing as Sophie walked into the bathroom. She bent over to wash her face and began to hack at the knots in her hair. It was going to be a long day...
30 minutes later, Sophie reappeared from the bathroom in clean clothes, makeup-free face, and her hair in a silky smooth ponytail down her back. It had taken 25 minutes to untangle her hair, and she was half considering cutting her hair right off at one point. She crawled down the stairs with the weight of her books dragging her down and dropped them with a definitive thud on the kitchen table. Edaline looked up from her dishwashing and clucked her tongue. "No, no, Sophie. If you do homework with that tired head of yours today, you'll get it all wrong. You have 2 weeks off- you can do it tomorrow." Sophie wanted to whine that she was hoping to get the homework over with, but she knew it was pointless. Plus, Edaline was right. With that foggy brain of hers, it would take her twice the time to complete her homework. Edaline must've noticed the defeat in Sophie's expression and smiled happily. "I was thinking we could go visit somebody today," she said. "Who?" asked Sophie. "Well, I wanted it to be a surprise. We have something to pick up in Mysterium and then we can go. Does that sound good?" Sophie nodded, already wondering who they were on their way to.
In Mysterium, Edaline grabbed a few things they needed at home. Sophie was hoping these items would give her a clue as to where they were going or who they were going to see, but it was just a run for errands. After conjuring them home, Edaline took out a clear crystal with a gold chain. Sophie had never seen it before but it looked worn. Edaline grabbed Sophie's and Grady's hand and the light swept them away. When they reappeared, Sophie was momentarily blinded. They were in a large room with walls made entirely out of gold. She looked around and noticed that everything was enormous. The furniture was made for somebody of tall stature, the ceilings being over 20 feet tall. That's when it hit her. The only place in the lost cities that looked like this was... "Sophie!" someone exclaimed in a squeaky voice. Sophie spun around and grinned. "Sandor!" She ran up and hugged him. Slightly surprised by the gesture, the goblin gently returned the hug. It had been a while since she had last seen him and she was overjoyed to visit him. It was an amazing surprise.
"Ahhh, the famous Sophie Foster," someone declared behind them. Sophie turned to see Grizel grinning, revealing her pointy teeth. Sophie smiled. "Hey, Grizel." Sandor blushed when she walked up to him, placing an arm around his waist. Sophie looked around. "So this is your new house?" she asked. "Yes," said Sandor. "We've just started getting used to it. It's very different after protecting you for so many years," he said, smiling fondly. "I'm guessing you guys are a real couple now?" Sophie prodded on. Grizel smiled victoriously. "Yep!" she declared, and Sandor was quick to nod. Sophie squealed. "I'm so happy for you! Wait 'til I tell Biana. She'll freak out!" Grizel had had a crush on Sandor for so long and he had in some ways rejected her, insisting that it wasn't "professional" enough. Once the Neverseen was eradicated and put to jail, though, Sandor, Grizel, and all the other bodyguards were released from their duties. Sophie insisted that Sandor returns to Gildingham with promises to visit often, and where Sandor went, Grizel followed. He had accepted a position as a military training professor and Grizel had accepted the position as Queen Hylda's personal guard when she re-offered. Both were now happily living together in Gildingham but had had trouble adjusting after so many years of turmoil.
"...and this is the training room," explained Sandor, who was giving them a tour of their home. Sophie was glad the goblin was satisfied with his new position and nodded along even though an intricate tour of their training room wasn't the most interesting thing to do. They were then served tea and talked for a long while about Sophie, work, Gildingham, and a very embarrassing conversation where Grady and Sandor complained about "that boy" (Keefe) and Sophie's new boyfriend-of-sorts, Fitz. She narrowly avoided another boy talk when Edaline announced that it was getting late and that Sophie hadn't had much sleep the night before. They bid farewell to their old friends and lept home. After a quick meal, Sophie collapsed in bed, exhausted. She fell asleep right away without bothering to take her shoes off.
