The Preparations

The 5 days leading up to the Winter Solstice Party were pretty uneventful. Sophie spent the first 2 completing all her school assignments to get them over with and the next 2 helping out in the pastures. They had to check on the verminion, who had swallowed a rock, and it was not a pretty sight. The day before the party, Sophie went dress shopping. She HATED dress shopping but the Vacker's party was highly formal. They did not take the solstice lightly. So Sophie had spent most of that day traipsing around the many dress stores, jewelry stores, and shoe stores of Atlantis, finally picking a beautiful dress, a pair of heels rigged to stop her from falling, and a few jewelry pieces. Sophie would be required to wear one of her Regent circlets since it was a public event and many people would be attending. Sophie was both excited and dreading the evening.

She had not received anymore messages from Fitz but in turn had gotten many from Keefe. His first one read:

Hey, Foster, I'm so sorry I haven't been able to talk or contact you in so long. I feel really terrible about the whole Paris Fiasco (as I have called it) and I hope you'll forgive me. Could we talk at the Vacker's party? Also, try not to trip, will you? I really don't want to make a trip to Elwin.

Sophie had had to laugh at that. She had already forgiven Keefe- it was barely his fault anyway. They had chatted a few more times but with Keefe's busy job at the Matchmaking consultant office, it was tough to reach him when he wasn't tired. All in all, Sophie was hopeful that things would soon be ready to return to normal.

The night before the party, Sophie had been entrusted to a vigorous before-party makeover/spa/preparation session required by Biana. Sophie didn't understand the girl's obsession with making her look good but obliged anyway. 3 different baths, a few face masks, hand and feet care, and countless other procedures later (with the help of Edaline and Flori), Sophie was done and well ready to go to bed. She shivered under her blankets. It was winter and the Elvin cities were not spared from the chilling cold. Despite the heat in her room, Sophie was cold and nervous. Tomorrow would be an interesting day.

She woke up late, at 10 am. She followed Biana's morning routine and went downstairs. What a sight! Edaline's hair was in rollers the old fashioned way and she was attempting to give Grady a hair cut. She could hear their bickering from the steps and burst out laughing as she entered the kitchen. Her parents then looked up, gave each other a look, and burst into a fit of giggles. Sophie din't know why exactly they were laughing so hard but it felt nice. She was treated to a lavish breakfast of Porcaroot pie, which tasted like bacon-cheese goodness, and 2 slices of mallowmelt. Biana wouldn't approve. Sophie then relaxed for a few hours, reading a book and laughing at Grady and Edaline's antics, still struggling with Grady's haircut and later getting Edaline's rollers out.

It was suddenly 5 and the party started in 3 hours. Sophie set to work with the careful combined help of Edaline, Flori, and Vertina, all working together to make Sophie look stunning. They washed her hair and infused it it with elixirs and oils to make it shiny and smooth. They curled it gently and pinned it into a beautiful style. Then, she got a mani-pedi in a simple and pretty style. Moving on to her makeup, they moisturized her face until it almost glowed and applied limited but striking makeup. It was almost time to go when Sophie slipped on her dress and stepped down the stairs to the main floor. When Grady saw her, he glowed with pride and Edaline tried not to ruin her impeccable makeup with her tears. Sophie was stunning.

She wore a simple, off-rose off the shoulder dress, suede heels, all paired with a starlight circlet. Grady and Edaline were both blown away at how fast Sophie had grown. Gone was the self conscious, scared little girl. Sophie was and looked like and adult.

They hugged her and Sophie choked back a sob. She could see the pride in her eyes and loved them for it. Together, they made it towards the Leap master. "Will you do the honors?" asked Grady. Sophie smiled nervously. "EVERGLEN!" They dissapeared in a blink.
