Fitz and Sophie walked out of the forest hand in hand, unable to hide their grins. They approached the table where their friends were anxiously awaiting their arrival. Biana had checked the clock 5 times in the past 15 minutes. It was 11:20. When the new couple approached, Biana grinned smugly. Dex was smiling, dimples showing, Tam looked at them curiously, Keefe was toying with his hair and resisting the urge to yell "Fitzphie for life!", and Lihn, Marella, Maruca, and Eileen smiled and high fived. Their mission was complete. "Hey," Sophie said. The chaos started. Biana slammed Sophie with a hug, as well as the other ladies, and Keefe and Dex cornered Fitz to give him a little talk. Dex specified that if Fitz hurt her again he'll create a very painful gadget to plop on his head in his sleep and Keefe said he wouldn't hesitate to recreate the Great Gulon Incident. Upon hearing this, Fitz paled considerably and nodded, reassuring the overprotective boys.
The friends partied, ate food, danced a little (although Sophie felt very uncomfortable), and talked and talked. "My plan worked! See, I told you they were meant to be. I'm a genius, a brilliant genius," Biana rubbed in. Sophie just smiled and laughed, sneaking glances at Fitz and blushing whenever they made eye contact. Sophie was super thankful for Biana and owed her a lot. At 11:45, the music stopped and the food vanished. Everyone was surprised-it was all quite sudden. A gilded podium appeared in the center of the huge deck, and Alden and Della walked up to it. "Thank you for coming to this winter solstice party!" Alden's voice boomed over the property. "At midnight, a fabulous light show will begin and the party will transform from a simple social event to a grand celebration. For those of you that would like a better view of the spectacle, there are floating platforms that can be used to head out to the lake that offer exceptional views with the water reflecting the lights," continued Della. "Let the real party...begin!" declared Alden.
The crowd roared and headed to the floating platforms. The deck had transformed into a huge dance floor with tall standing tables placed around for the small snacks and drinks that were being offered. The keeper crew held back and waited for the thrush of people to take the first platforms. It was 11:50 when they all climbed aboard one of the platforms, eager to see the light show. Marella, Maruca, and Eileen left to find some other friends so it was only the original 7. They hopped onto one of the floating platforms and it cast off the shore once everyone was seated. The platforms were outfitted with plush gray couches, all tilted slightly upwards in a square formation. Food and drinks appeared on the little square table in the center. Sophie sat next to Fitz, squeezing his hand tightly. Ever since the destruction of Ravagog, the Ogre capital, Sophie had felt a little uncomfortable around water, specifically when she was on a chunk of wood floating on a lake. Fitz smiled at her and she smiled back. Somehow, without speaking, they managed to communicate everything they felt through eye contact and reassuring gestures.
"Let's get this party started!" Keefe exclaimed. "And hey, will Sophitz quit it for a sec? Thanks," he declared. Sophie blushed furiously and Biana stood up to sit in between them. Lihn sat on her other side, which forced Fitz to move next to the boys. Biana laughed. "Just 'cause you're together doesn't mean I'm gonna let you steal my best friend, Fitz," she said. Oh, they were gonna make a big deal out of their relationship all right. Lihn was to Sophie's left, clockwise was Tam, Dex, Keefe, Fitz, Biana, and Sophie. It was 11:55 and you could hear hushed conversations all over the lake. The only source of light came from the illuminated glasses containing different beverages- Lushberry juice, Fizzleberry wine, and an assortment of desert flavored smoothies. "Who wants the mallowmelt smoothie?" "I want it!" "Hey, I wanted the fizzleberry wine!" "Pass the indigoober smoothie please!" The band fought over their drinks as Sophie settled for some lushberry juice. Suddenly, a loud gong rang out and the world erupted into light.
A countdown started in the middle of the sky. "10! 9! 8! 7! 6! 5! 4! 3! 2! 1!" The crowd cried out as soon as it got to one and Sophie whooped in the midst of the euphoria. They sky then lit up into millions of colors, dots of light flying all over the place until they stopped. A breathtaking spring scene lit the sky, with vivid fields of flowers and trees in full bloom. Suddenly, the orbs of light separated and flew all over until they formed a summer scene. Lush green trees surrounded a lake with tall mountains all around. The green was blinding. As soon as it started, the orbs scattered to form a fall scene. The oranges and reds were abundant, orbs moving to mimic leaves falling. Then, the orbs moved around and expanded until all Sophie could see was white. The sky had transformed itself into a winter wonderland. The crowd ooed and ahhed, amazed at the spectacle before them. It was truly breathtaking.
