A few days had passed. Sophie finished all of her schoolwork and was now enjoying her break. But there was one thing on her mind-no, two things. First of all- the Tam and Dex dilemma. Sophie was struggling to figure out what to do, how to help them. They were her closest friends and it wasn't fair how they would be treated if they came out. But what could Sophie do? She had no power. And then there was Fitz. He was now officially her boyfriend, but so far Sophie had not played the girlfriend part too well. He hailed her 4 times- she replied on the 5th time. She declined an invitation to go on a date, claiming to be too busy with school work when she was really just chilling with the Alicorns. What was wrong with her? Sophie had thought about it but honestly hadn't the faintest of clues.
4 days later, Fitz got tired of Sophie's indecisiveness and lept to Havenfield. There, he was met by a very surprised, slightly sheepish Sophie, sitting on her bed eating prattles with a spoon. "Oh, hi Fiz!" she said, through a mouthful of sweets. "Didn' know 'ou 'ere comin' to'ay." One look at the fumbling Sophie and Fitz burst out laughing. "Oh, Sophie." She blushed beet red and hid behind her hair. "I was just wondering what was going on? I mean you're my girlfriend, I kinda care about you," he joked. Sophie coughed and looked at him. "I'm sorry. I just... can't stop thinking about... you know," she replied. Fitz frowned and sat on the edge of the huge bed. "Yeah, me too. I really don't know what to think," he said. Sophie thought he was incredibly handsome when he was confused but quickly snapped out of it. "I just feel awful," she said. "They can't be who they are because of some stupid matchmaking process. How fair is that?"
Fitz nodded and sighed. "I guess we're really not as progressive as I thought," Fitz noted. Sophie slumped forward, thinking. After a second, she sat back straight. "Well," she started," we're gonna have to do something. I'm not just gonna sit here and watch my friends be miserable. It's not fair." Fitz nodded. "Maybe if I ask my dad we could..." He was interrupted by Sophie. "No, no, no, we can't tell anyone. That's not our job. Plus, I think we should try to form a plan first and then go on from there," she declared. Fitz's frown deepened. "Yeah, but..." Sophie shook her head. "That's not what they would want." Fitz sighed and stood up. "Let's talk about this somewhere more comfortable," he said. Sophie blushed again. "I'm... not dressed," she said. Fitz looked at her funny. "It's 11 am and you're still in your pajamas?" he asked. Sophie nodded. "Fine, go get changed," he said. Sophie stumbled out but was stopped when arms wrapped around her. "I missed you," said Fitz into her ear. She turned around and hugged him back, breathing in his elven cologne. They pulled apart and Sophie scampered into the bathroom.
It was cold outside and Sophie made sure to bundle up. She wore a warm, white tunic and pulled on an intricately designed gray sweater that buttoned down low enough to reveal the slight ruffles at the bottom of the tunic. She slipped on her comfy boots and tied her hair in a haphazard knot at the back of her hair. She grabbed a padded cloak, slipped it on, and ran out to meet Fitz outside, who was pulling on some gloves. "It's colder here than at Everglen," he stated. "Yeah, 'cause we're by the ocean," she said, rolling her eyes. They walked up the hill toward the Panakes and sat down. They faced each other and Sophie shivered. "We should've stayed inside," she said. Fitz shrugged. "So," he said. "What's your plan?" Sophie stiffened. "Well," she fumbled, "I have 2 plans. The first one is we help them establish their relationship in secret. We find a way to make it seem like they are working together on a project or better yet they get a job at the same place. That way, if they want to, they can share an apartment or a house, and people wouldn't be suspicious."
Fitz had his thinking face on. "It could work... but I have a feeling Tam won't be so keen on keeping it private. He seems like the type who would want to be left alone when choosing romantic partners. Which I understand," he quickly added, smiling at Sophie. "I think we should hear your second option, though." Sophie nodded. "The second option is we help them establish a way to present their relationship to the elven population. They would have to talk to the Councillors and present their case to find a way to let them consider those who are interested in those of the same gender... well, they would have to convince the councilors to have special lists for people who are into elves of their same gender. It would have to be an alternative matchmaking list of some sort, but the issue is that people may not be willing to admit their sexuality. It's all very tricky," she explained. Fitz nodded. "Those seem like the best options at this point. We'll have to talk to Tam and Dex to see how they feel and to let them know that we'll help them."
Sophie smiled. She liked seeing Fitz so involved in matters like these. He saw her smiling and turned to look at her. Grinning, he leaned in and gently touched his lips to hers. Sophie smiled against his embrace and returned the kiss. They stayed there for a while until a voice interrupted them. "Oy! Not when I'm around. If I pretend my daughter isn't dating anyone, it's not for you to walk in and interrupt my wishful thinking," Grady exclaimed. Fitz and Sophie pulled away and he gave her a quizzical look.
I had to tell them, and besides, Edaline would've found out sooner rather than later.
She transmitted to him and he smiled even wider. "Sorry, Grady!" he called out. Grady glared and walked away, mumbling incoherently "that boy" and "not my daughter" and "I'm keeping my eyes on you". Sophie and Fitz burst out laughing. Fitz stood up and grabbed Sophie's hand to help her up. They returned arm in arm to Havenfield where Edaline was serving mallowmelt and tea. As they walked, Sophie silently thought about the one thing she never told him.
She had a third plan.
And he was not going to like it.
