Sophie swore that she wouldn't cry anymore. She had done enough crying for 3 human lifetimes. But there, staring at the empty space where Biana stormed out, she was very near tears. What was all of this about? They hadn't spoken over the break but things were fine before they left. Why the sudden change? Sophie was torn between confronting Biana or staying paralyzed with fear. She took a few deep breaths before following Biana to the washroom.
Biana stood in front of her gold sink, brushing her teeth with a scowl on her face. Sophie approached quietly just as Cleorie glided out, giving her a meaningful look. Sophie waited for Biana to finish, standing quietly at the entrance to the room. Biana spit aggressively into the sink, rinsed her mouth, and began to gather her things forcefully, blinking in and out of view as she avoided Sophie's eyes. "Biana? Can we talk?" Sophie asked quietly. Biana ignored her. "Please? What did I do wrong?" Sophie practically begged for her best friend to answer.
Biana set her things down on a stuffed bench and huffed. She shook her head angrily, looking at her reflection in the mirror. "You see, that's the funny thing. You don't even know what's wrong. Yet you could've. If you'd cared, that is," she said. Sophie stood there silently, trying to comprehend the situation. "You're right. I don't understand," Sophie said with a sigh. Biana slammed her hands onto the sink's base. "Of course you don't! It's because you're never around!" she practically yelled.
Biana began to pace, her body flickering rapidly. "After all these years. After everything we've been through. We were finally happy. Yet you had to be selfish and ruin it. Fitz was over the moon when you decided to finally date him. Did you know that?" she barked out. Sophie nodded but Biana cut her off with a bitter laugh. "That's the thing. You didn't. Fitz was a mess after the final battle at Eternalia. He was there when he saw the people that died! Enough blood and death to shatter his mind!"
She was screeching now and Sophie flinched. Biana was not finished. "And you sauntered in, once all the death was removed. Sophie Elizabeth Foster-Ruewen, the Moonlark who defeated the Neverseen. All you did was capture them. Render them useless with your inflicting. Then, the Black Swan swooped in and imprisoned them all. But the slaughter down below- the so called 'distraction'- Fitz was a part of that. YOU PLANNED IT THAT WAY!" She was so angry her teeth clenched tightly, her beautiful features distorted with rage.
"You used him. You bait the Neverseen into thinking you would be with your precious cognate. Once they you realized you weren't there, the Black Swan's plan set in place, they went after you, and Fitz narrowly avoided death. And then, once Fitz was in recovery, you sauntered in and 'helped him' heal. If only he'd known you'd been willing to sacrifice him. I saw through that. But I said nothing. NOTHING! I was willing to forgive you for HIS SAKE!" By now, Sophie's cheeks were drenched with tears, and she was shaking her head, trying to deny Biana's accusation.
She was right, though. Deep down, Sophie knew. When the Black Swan had told her their plan, she knew the chances of Fitz dying were there. It was true; she'd been willing to sacrifice him for the greater good. They all had. But in this case, she could have lost Fitz's soul. He would've been an empty shell with little chance of recovery. Biana, of course, knew this, and whatever Sophie had done now had only increased Biana's suspicion of Sophie.
"I can explain!" Sophie said desperately. Biana spun around, rage and hatred burning in her eyes. "EXPLAIN? It's past that Sophie! You've done the damage! Fitz is hurt! He misses you desperately. He NEEDS you. His mental stability was already on thin ice and you stabilized him. Now that you're gone, he's spinning out of control. A few days ago, he began smashing things on his head to knock himself out. It got so bad, we had to give him sedatives. He then began thrashing in his sleep, bruising and breaking bones as he tried battling nightmares. And today..." Biana's eyes welled up with a fresh round of tears.
Sophie's heart went cold. Something had happened. That's why Biana was late. Fitz was hurt! Her mind screamed. Biana looked away to wipe her tears. She looked at Sophie again. "He tried hurling himself out of his third floor bedroom window. The gnomes found him just in time and dragged him inside. Tiergan was called immediately to try and help him but there's just nothing we can do. His echo is controlling him, combined with his out-of-control mind..." Biana was sobbing uncontrollably now while Sophie's tears fell silently.
Biana hiccupped through her last phrase. "If you had come home... n-none of this would've happened. He needed you. A-and you stayed here for some... some stupid studying? We can't count on you," she finally said. "Fitz is on heavy sedatives. A whole team of telepaths are at Everglen to try and stabilize him, see how they can fix his mind. And before you ask, no, they don't need your help. They can't. Fitz will flip when he sees you and they can't have that. So I need you to promise me one thing. Can you do that?" she asked shakily.
Sophie nodded yes, her eyes a waterfall of tears. "A-anything." Biana wiped her cheeks and checked her hair in the mirror, trying to look presentable. She then looked at Sophie with an expression full of anger, sadness, and disgust. "You've already done enough damage. We don't need the Moonlark to save the day any more. Your purpose is fulfilled. So stay. Away. From. My. Family." With that, she stepped by Sophie's side and left the bathroom, leaving Sophie crying to herself at the friendship she had destroyed by her actions.
