Sophie woke up the next morning and yawned happily. For the first time since the break, she had slept in. She lazily turned to check to the time and read 10 o'clock. She had missed breakfast, but no matter; the gnome kitchen staff would whip her something up. She slid out of bed and gently touched the smoky topaz that rested on her nightstand. The stone reacted to her touch and buzzed lightly as if greeting an old friend. She touched it one last time then went to the bathroom to get ready.
She had left her hair in a braid the night before and therefore did not need to detangle it. The bags under her eyes had lightened but she decided to apply some makeup to conceal it anyway- she had to make it seem as if she had really slept to convince Biana that she wasn't doing anything shady while everyone was gone. She slipped on a light green tunic that stopped below her knees and some leggings. After digging through her dresser to find an acceptable pair of sandals and tying her hair into a neater braid, she slid down the banister of the stairs and skipped to the kitchens.
After getting a heaping plate of kringequols (a mashed fruit that tasted like french toast), Sophie left the gold tower for the first time in months and strolled the grounds of Foxfire. Sophie was surprised to see students in the halls after a few waved to her until she remembered the break only applied to the Elite levels. "Sophie! What are you doing here?" "She's studying, idiot," "Yeah, but the elites are on vacation, stupid" "Shut up both of you! Be nice". Sophie smiled as Rex, Bex, and Lex stormed towards her, eager to say hello.
The triplets had considerably grown but had not lost their conspiratorial smiles. "Hey, how is everybody?" she asked. Bex spoke up. "Dex came home but he's been acting weird." "Yeah, hes quiet and sneaks out," added Lex. "We help him, of course, since he's just a novice at being a trickster," commented Rex. "At least we think hes being a trickster," Lex intervened."Yeah but who would he trick? Stina stayed at school and Sophie did too," reasoned Bex, her eyes glinting with superiority at her brothers. "I don't know, but he still hates Fitz Vacker," shrugged Rex.
Sophie smiled as they debated, suddenly having forgotten Sophie's existence. Lex turned to her. "Why are you still here? I heard Aunt Edaline was really upset you didn't come home," he said. Sophie's smile as suddenly erased off her face as Rex and Bex attacked him. "You weren't supposed to say anything!" said Bex, as Rex proceeded to kick him. This started an all out brawl, with Bex and Sophie looking on. "Mom said they can't fight me anymore since I'm a girl 'n all. I still do it when she's not looking, but not at school. That would just make me look bad," she explained. Sophie had other things to worry about.
"What did you say about Edaline?" she asked. Bex looked down, embarrassed, muttering something about not being cautious enough. "Auntie Edaline was really upset you didn't come home for break. They had dinner at our house, of course, since Rex and Lex can't be trusted to not break anything or fight and then break something again. Besides, they would put the animals in a frenzy like the past 2 times so... anyway, they came over for dinner and Edaline was being awfully quiet. They had this 'adult conversation' but I mean, c'mon, we had to eavesdrop, so we overheard Edaline crying and she just didn't understand why you would stay at school. It got prettty dramatic. Dex tried to explain that you were busy and the gold levels were hard but she wouldn't accept that. It was weird, to be honest," she said.
Sophie's gut felt like it had been stabbed. Suddenly, she regretted eating so much for breakfast. "Gosh, I had no idea it would put her in such pain... I just had so much studying to do and I would have been distracted if I went home. I thought she understood that," Sophie said worriedly. Bex shrugged. "Hey, I don't know, and honestly, it's none of my business, but you didn't hear that from me, got it? I don't like family drama. That's why I'm never getting matched!" she declared.
Sophie paled and nodded. "Um... it was good seeing you. Bye, guys!" She scampered off as the twins watched, perplexed, Lex and Rex still in a wrestling hold. "Stop it, you imps! You look ridiculous!" hissed Bex. The brothers rolled their eyes but separated. "What's wrong with her?" Lex asked. Bex shrugged. "I don't know, but I think Edaline has the right to be so confused," she said, as they all watch her receding figure running back towards the entwined towers.
