"We'll see you later!" Aileen and Joe say in unison after dropping me off at school.
"Yeah, have fun you two." I murmur, a bit disappointed that they leave me alone again.
I enter the school building and make my way to my locker. Thankfully, everyone seems to mind their own business until Maggie approaches me. "Is it true that Noah's coming back today?"
I try to look as unbothered as possible. "How would I know?"
Maggie continues following me around. "Oh, I thought the two of you were still in contact, my bad."
"No, we're not." I simply say. Why does she even care that much?
"So you wouldn't know if he's seeing anyone?" Maggie bites her bottom lip.
I stop in my tracks and think for a few seconds before answering. Keep up the act, Chloe. "Like I said, we're not in contact. Why don't you ask him yourself if he comes?" As quickly as she came, Maggie disappears back into the crowd.
I open my locker and start sorting through it when someone else walks up to me. "Surprise!" Mark's voice sounds next to me.
I look up to see him with a red rose in his hand. "Is this for me?" During our whole relationship Mark has never gotten me any flowers and it disappoints me even more that he's now willing to fight for me. After everything he's done, it's too late.
"Of course, dummy." As he gives me the flower, his fingers keep lingering on my hand. "I hope you like it."
I want to brush them off but my brain tells me me not to. So I embrace him in a hug instead.
"Noah!" Maggie's voice rings in my ear. I look up to see my boyfriend in the hallway, staring at Mark and I. Please, don't freak out about this. My eyes are pleading him to keep his calm. It's just an act, nothing more...
Slowly, I let go of Mark. As I look behind him, Noah's already caught up in a conversation with Maggie. She twirls her hair around her finger and laughs a bit too much for my liking. I keep waiting for him to reject her and tell her that he has a girlfriend but it looks like he doesn't.
"Are you okay?" Mark asks snapping me out of my trance. He turns around to see Noah as well. "I didn't know he was back. That bastard still owes me."
I notice Mark clenching his fists. "Let's just get out of here." I suggest but Mark's attention is still fixated on Noah.
Carefully, I place my hand on his and wait for him to relax before intertwining our fingers. In an instant, Mark looks up to me and smiles. "You're right. He's not worth it anyways."
I force a smile and pull him as far away from Noah as possible.
Mark takes me all the way to my next class while carrying my textbooks. "So what do you think about us?" He asks as we reach the door.
I tilt my head to the side and giggle like a lovestruck teenager. "I think that I have a little surprise for you. You just have to wait a while longer."
"That sounds intriguing." He leans in closer to kiss me but I tap the tip of his nose with my finger instead.
"No, not yet... let's save this up for what I have planned. I promise you're gonna love it." I twirl around with a smile on my lips before disappearing into the classroom. Mark looks after me, his eyes gleaming with joy. What a fool.
I sit down and unpack my bag. Students are chatting all around me as Noah enters the classroom. He doesn't even deign to look at me but as he walks past my desk a little piece of crumbled paper falls onto my notebook.
I look around to see if anyone noticed before unfolding the paper.
Looks like your plan is working. You're surely doing a great job, keeping up the act. For all I know, your ex is head over heels for you. Let's settle this once and for all. My place after school...
I swallow hard as I fold the paper back together. He surely is jealous of Mark. Great.
-
Since nobody's there to pick me up, I walk home by myself. Usually it takes me about 20 minutes but with the thought of Noah's note on my mind I'm practically running.
I stumble through the door and throw my shoes to the side. If Noah's really angry at me, I have to try everything to calm him down before it comes to our first fight as a couple.
Quickly, I put on a red lacy dress, black heels and a little bit of powder to match my dress. Let's just say I dress to impress.
-
Noah's front door is slightly open as I arrive. I walk inside to see a trail of red roses on the floor. My heart skips a beat at the sight of them. Thankfully, it's not the angry and jealous welcome I expected.
I close the door behind me and start following the trail of roses along the hallway until it stops in front of a closed door.
Carefully, I turn the doorknob and step inside a darkened room. There's a king size bed in the middle with red pillows on top of it, candles on both nightstands and a flat screen on the other side of the room.
While looking around two arms wrap around me from behind. He kisses my neck gently. "When I saw Mark giving you a red rose today, I wanted to give you a dozen. When I saw you hugging him, I wanted to hug you even tighter. And when I saw him almost kissing you, I wanted to shower you with all the love I have. If I could, I would lay the world at your feet, my love." Noah whispers into my ear.
I can't help the tears from streaming down my face. As soon as the first one falls onto Noah's arm, he twirls me around and pulls me into his chest. The sobs escape me mouth uncontrollably.
"Please, don't cry." Noah breathes into my hair. He holds me tightly until my tears are wearing off.
"It's your own fault. You can't say something that beautiful and expect me to keep my calm." I chuckle against his soaking shirt.
"Okay, I don't really like you that much. I just wanted to get you to sleep with me."
"You're an idiot." I finally manage to laugh instead of crying and hit his chest playfully.
Noah lets go and looks at me, his lips now smiling as well. "That's what I wanted to see, that beautiful smile."
