"I really wish I didn't have to tell you that but I'm going to move to the UK in a few days."
I was speechless. My best friend since childhood was going to leave the country. All I could do was to stare at her with tears in my eyes.
"I'm so sorry, Chloe. It's just that my mom's company has transferred her to the UK and we really need the money. Trust me, if there was any chance to stay, I would."
"But I need you here with everything going on. I can't handle this by myself.", I finally managed to say.
"We can still video chat all the time and I can call Colin whenever you want, to tell him what an idiot he is." We both laughed at the same time but suppressed it right afterwards.
"I'll just miss you so much." A tear slid down my cheek as Aileen pulled me into a long hug.
"I know and I'll miss you too but I'll come back as soon as possible, I promise."
-
I decided to go home. After everything I was not in the mood to go back to the game.
"Hey Chloe, why are you leaving?" The sound of his voice was just too familiar. He held my shoulder firmly and turned me around.
"I don't want to talk about it right now. Just give me some time for myself, please."
"Why do you have to be so selfish? Because of me our team just won and my own girlfriend couldn't even stay to watch the end of the game. I really thought you were more supportive than that." Mark said in an arrogant voice.
"Are you serious right now? I'm really trying to be there for you as much as I can. Is it too much to ask for if I want you to return this favor for once?"
"What are you talking about? I..." But before he could say anything else, his teammates arrived behind us.
"Hey guys, wanna celebrate our win today? There'll be a house party at my place in about an hour." Joe asked hitting Mark's shoulder.
"What do you say, Chloe?" Mark turned to me raising his eyebrows.
"Sorry, guys but I'm not feeling so well. I think I'll have to pass this time."
"Are you serious right now?" Mark asked ignoring everyone else around us. He really had the nerve to call me out in front of his whole team. What was wrong with him all of a sudden?
"Well, if you're not feeling so good you should probably get some rest. I'm sure there'll be more parties soon that you can come to." Noah stated to my relief.
"You're right, thanks Noah. I'll see y'all tomorrow." I said in a hurry.
"See ya," they all said at once. I left before Mark could stop me. All I wanted to do in this moment was to go home and sleep.
-
As I arrived home, I cooked myself dinner and sat down at the kitchen table. Out of boredom I started to scroll through my old messages. That's when it hit me. All the messages from the unknown number seemed to lead to one person in particular. Only he could know about our fight and what Mark was hiding from me, only he would try to tease me like that in order to break us up. It had to be... Colin.
Everything suddenly seemed to add up. Colin was at the game today and I received his message right after he left. He knew Mark better than anyone else and as much as I tried to deny it he liked me or at least he wanted me...
Slowly, my hatred against Colin grew even stronger. Who did he think he was, messing with my life like that? His hints about Mark hiding something from me probably weren't even true.
I just had to know for sure:
Me: I know who you are
Un: You do?
Me: Just answer one question. Did we talk at the game today?
Un: Yes we kind of did...
Me: How could you? I never want to see you or talk to you again!
Un: Fine, you'll get your will. But still everything I told you about Mark is true. Just be careful or you'll get hurt
How could I trust Colin more than my own boyfriend? Mark was amazing and I was lucky to have him in my life. I just felt awful for not trusting him the way I should have. There was only one way to make it up to him. I had to go to Joe's party.
In a rush I put on some makeup, a short red dress and my favorite high heels. I knew that Mark would love seeing me like this. He always wanted me to dress up when we went out and sometimes even at home but I preferred my casual baggy clothes.
-
I already heard the music blasting from miles away. Joe really had a thing for big parties and whenever he threw one, you could be sure that the whole school would show up.
It was tough walking all the way to Joe's house in my heels but I told myself that it would be worth it.
Cole was standing right beside the front door with a random girl in his arms. "Chloe, glad you could still make it. By the way, you look stunning today." He checked me out from head to toe making his girl role her eyes.
"Thanks. Have you seen Mark?"
"Yes, I think he's in the living room with the others." As soon as Cole finished his sentence the girl beside him already locked lips with him again.
Next thing I saw were Noah and Stacey. I couldn't believe she had actually managed to get Noah's attention after bursting out into tears at Colin's rude comment. She was all touchy and flirty as she twirled her hair around her finger and caressed Noah's arm with the other hand. I had to admit she knew what she was doing but still, Noah didn't seem to be too interested in her.
It was torturing to watch. Every time Stacey made another move, Noah backed away from her. With her good looks she probably wasn't used to being rejected.
After a while Noah's eyes found mine. I smiled at him, amused by the whole situation but his face was begging me to get him out of there. Of course, I decided to help him out while having a little bit of fun myself.
