Chapter 6: Denial

I walk into Mrs Gregory's classroom and regret it right away when I see Colin approaching me. „Hey princess."

„Seriously? I told you to leave me alone!" I turned away from him and sat down on my chair.

„Is this about what I said yesterday at the game? You know that it was meant as a joke..." He looked at me as if he didn't remember the messages at all which annoyed me even more.

„Do you really want to play dumb? I'm talking about the creepy messages you sent me. And I told you that I never wanted to see you or talk to you again!" Slowly, I was losing my temper.

„Geez! What has gotten into you? I never sent you any messages but fine I'll leave you alone..." He brought his face really close to my ear and whispered, „... for now." What was that supposed to mean? And why was he even denying the messages? I knew that he was the one who sent them anyway.

Suddenly I heard a girl next to me gasping. As I looked around I saw Noah walking into the classroom. He looked like a mess. Noah's face was covered with bruises and the dark circles underneath his eyes were clearly visible.

After a few seconds our eyes met but he looked away from me right afterwards. Noah sat down silently with everyone around him talking and whispering.

I had no choice but to walk over to him. "Noah, what happened to you?" Still, he didn't dare to look me in the eye. "Noah, I'm sorry for pushing you away like that yesterday but you don't have to ignore me..."

"I got into a fight."

"Yes, I figured. But why and with whom?"

"Chloe, please. I can't tell you." Since the first day we met I've never seen Noah like that. He almost seemed... vulnerable.

"Why?", I whispered. In that very moment I heard loud footsteps behind me followed by someone clearing their throat.

"Is it really too much to ask for if I want you to go back to your seat and stop talking when I walk in?"

I knew that I could only lose this argument. "Of course not, Mrs. Gregory. I'm sorry."

-

As soon as the bell rang Noah rushed out of the classroom but I still managed to catch up with him. "Wait, you still owe me an explanation."

"Why would I owe you anything?" He didn't even look me in the eyes.

"Because of what you said yesterday. You promised me to be there for me." My voice was shaky.

Suddenly Noah stood still. He looked forward as if he had seen a ghost. "I should go." Without any further explanation he turned around and left.

When I looked around I saw Mark walking towards me. He had a black eye and scars all over his face. "What did he tell you?"

"Nothing... What the hell happened between you two?" Mark and Noah were the ones fighting the other night. It was the only logical explanation. But why? The two of them had always gotten along pretty well since they were teammates.

"Look, Chloe. I'm sorry for what happened yesterday. I should have been more sensitive and I will be in the future."

"Then why aren't you answering my question? What happened?" I was starting to get impatient.

"It was just a stupid fight over the game..." I knew that Mark was still hiding something from me but he wouldn't tell me what it was anyway or at least not in that moment. I just had to wait until he was ready to tell me.

"Just promise me that you two won't fight again. It's not worth it."

"If that idiot doesn't start a fight again...", Mark said through gritted teeth.

"Wait, Noah started the fight?"

"Yes, he was out of his mind over some bullshit." In that moment I remembered what had happened the day before. The fight started only minutes after Noah left my room. Was it possible that Noah found out about what happened and fought Mark because of me? But on the other hand, why would he? We're not even close friends.

I stared at the wall completely lost in thought. "Chloe?" Mark snapped his fingers in front of my face. "Are you okay?"

"Yes, of course..." I put my arm around his neck in order to distract him. "I should get back to class. See you later." After a short kiss I turned around and left. I was definitely not in the mood to explain what happened last night after Mark left. He would only get jealous and angry about it.

-

Later that day, I was laying on my bed scrolling through Instagram. My mind was still spinning when I heard a noise from downstairs. My parents were usually still working at that time but maybe they came home early today.

"Mom? Dad?", I shouted from upstairs but nobody answered. "Who's there?" Everything stayed silent.

After a while I sneaked out of my room, down the hall. From the top of the stairs I could see the back of a man standing in our living room. He was looking at the family pictures standing on a drawer.

I walked back to my room on tiptoes and locked the door behind me. The man could possibly be a robber. So I decided to stay in my room until he was gone. I didn't have a chance to fight him anyways.

I sat down with my back against the door and waited. Minutes passed by and nothing happened. After a while I wondered if he was gone already but I didn't dare opening the door.

That's when I heard loud footsteps on the stairs followed by a knock on my door. I immediately held my breath covering my mouth with my hand.

The silence was broken by another knock on the door. My mind was spinning. What did he want from me? Why wasn't he just taking some stuff and leaving? How long would it take for him to give up?

Suddenly I saw a piece of paper passing underneath my door. I carefully opened it and read, "I still want you and I'm coming to get you."

Was that some kind of joke? Only Colin would write something like that but would he seriously break into my house...? There was only one safe way to find out:

Me: Leave me alone! I'm not going to open that door...

Un: What are you talking about? Which door?

Me: Don't play dumb. I know that you broke into my house and that you are waiting on the other side of the door...

Un: Why would I break into your house?

Me: I don't know, tell me!

Un: Just stay where you are! Don't let anyone inside! I'm coming...

But if Colin wasn't waiting on the other side of my door, who was?

Author's Note:
Hey loves, I'm sorry for not updating any sooner but I'm on vacation right now and I could barely find the time to write this chapter.

What do you think about Colin's behavior when Chloe talked to him about the messages? Was he telling the truth?
What do you think Mark and Noah fought about?
And most importantly, who broke into Chloe's house? 😳
