"You've been in your apartment all week long, what's the deal?" Monte asked.
"I dunno." I said. "Not feeling great recently."
"Why?"
"Just... Dunno. Emotions."
"Ah, that's fair. Max wanted to talk, is it okay if I send him in?"
"Yeah, sure."
Monte left my apartment and Max came in. "Hi."
"Hey, Max."
"I was, uh, wondering if, uh, I could see Ronnie?"
"I'm not a dictator."
"No, I just... Could you come with?"
I sat up. "Yeah. Give me ten minutes to get ready."
"I'm sorry how I treated you. We were all stressed and-"
"I was being a bitch, I know." I went into my room and quickly changed into a shirt and jeans. I came back out, brushing my hair. "Believe me, I'm sorry too."
"I'm glad we can resolve this, even if it's because you got high and pregnant. How's that, by the way?"
"Finally starting to feel better since I did it."
"That's good."
I applied some eyeliner. "Yeah. Come on, I'll show you the shortcut to the prison."

"Hey, Ronnie."
"Max?" Ronnie looked at us. "That's new."
"He wanted to see you." I said quietly. "He's sorry."
"I am."
"You're sorry?" Ronnie asked. "Since when?"
"Since... Ash helped me. She's smart." Max smiled sadly. "She's really smart. Man, if she didn't waste it on heroin and coke, man, she'd be..."
"Ash? I wanna talk to Max. Alone."
I nodded and walked away, still in earshot of them.
"You should've dated her, dude."
"I know. I know, believe me. I know everything about her. Up until the last couple months. Hell, I grew up with her. I introduced her to drugs, for God's sake."
"When you get out. Don't date a girl while you're in prison."
"I'm not stupid, Max."
"I'm not saying you are."
"She's doing okay?"
"Got fucked on heroin a couple weeks back, but yeah, she's okay. I'm watching her."
"Promise on our birthday you'll do something fun?"
"I promise."
"She dating anyone?"
"No."
Ronnie sighed. "We... She was seventeen, almost eighteen. I would've been almost twenty. I told her I had a crush on her, and she said that it wouldn't work because we grew up together, in the same house, since we were eleven. She was the responsible one. I should've gotten to her when I had the chance."
"She sucked your dick."
"For a line of coke! And yeah, I want that again, but like, this time, I want it to be because she really likes me. I want her. Not drug Ash. Just Ash."
Max sighed loudly. "I'm sorry."
"Well. Whatever. Go get her?"
Max came around the corner and saw me. He realized I had been listening in and raised an eyebrow. I walked back. "Hey, Ron."
"Hi, Ash." He smiled at me. "What's new with you?"
"Nothing much, it's been all lame. I miss you, when're you out?"
"I don't even know."
"You're not helpful."
"I know. Doing anything fun? Doing anyone?"
"No and no. Single as hell. I'm unattractive."
"No, you're not." Ronnie said. "You're pretty cute. I'd date you."
"Bold statement."
"I know."
I laughed. "Ugh. It's so boring without you."
"I'm trying my best to get out."
"Mhm. I got a call the other day saying you were in a fight?"
"It wasn't my fault!"
"You still got in the fight. What happened?"
Ronnie sighed. "A guy insulted ETF."
"Aw, you're still willing to fight for them."
"The tiniest bit."
A guard came over. "Radke, time's up."
Ronnie nodded. "Bye, Max. Thanks for coming. It really meant a lot."
"Yeah."
"Bye, babe. I'll miss you."
"Bye, Ronnie."
The guard led him away. Max looked at me. "He still calls you babe?"
"Yeah. It's a joke."
"I know, but... I know you heard our conversation. He said he regrets not dating you."
I rubbed my forehead. "I know, I heard. You don't need to repeat the whole thing."
"What're you gonna do?"
"I fucked Craig a couple weeks back and a few days ago, had an abortion. Give me a few years to figure out what I'm gonna do about this Ronnie thing."
"Okay."
"Wanna go back?"
"Yeah."
