“He’s staring at you again.” Calum puts his phone back in his pocket and looks around, trying to find the person Ashton is talking about. They’re sitting on a bench in a park not too far from their neighbourhood and Calum can’t think of anyone who’d want to stare at him.

“Who is?”

“Over there.” Ashton nods towards the diner across the road and when Calum looks over his eyes lock with a blue pair. The other boy quickly looks away, giving Calum a chance to take in his appearance. He’s tall, at least two feet taller than the green haired boy next to him, and has very broad shoulders but despite that he still looks young, probably not much older than Calum. The other boy says something that makes the blonde one laugh and Calum’s lost. He knows in that moment that he has a stupid crush on a boy he’ll most probably never even talk to.

A few months later and a lot has changed. Calum hasn’t, he’s still the same he’s always been, but his life. Ashton doesn’t spend as much time with him anymore, he’s started to hang out at the diner downtown and from what Calum’s heard from his mother that isn’t something Anne Marie approves of. Whenever his mum would ask him about it though, Calum would just shrug and leave the room, not knowing what to say. He don’t know why Ashton suddenly stopped wearing his glasses and traded the school uniform for bandanas and band shirts. He doesn’t know why Ash suddenly sneaks out all the time and comes back smelling like alcohol and cigaret smoke.

And now here he is, standing outside Calum’s window with his hands in his pockets, expecting Calum to climb out the window and come with him. The worst part of it isn’t even that he’s expecting Calum to just drop everything and do so, the worst part is that they both know he will do exactly that.

“Come on Cal, we’re not gonna do anything bad.” Ashton leans forward, almost as if he’s considering climbing up to the window. “Please, I just wanna hang out with you. We haven’t seen each other in ages.”

“jeez, wonder why.” Calum tries, he really tries, to say no, but two minutes later he’s sneaking out through the backdoor, running across the lawn to where Ashton is waiting, hidden behind a tree.

“Calum!” Ashton pulls him in for a hug, before he gets a chance to say anything and when he lets go he grabs Calum’s hand and starts pulling him towards the street. “come on, I know exactly where to go.”

fifteen minutes later and they’re entering the diner they used to sit across from a few months ago and Calum is trying his best not to show how nervous he is. He’s always wanted to go there but his parents always warned him about “the places downtown” and he’d always been too scared to actually do it. But now here he is, standing behind Ashton by the door, looking around and trying to take everything in. The diner is practically empty, the only guests are an old couple sitting in the booth furthest from the door, and it looks just like the ones in movies like Grease.

“Ash! Didn’t think you’d show up tonight.” A voice from behind the counter makes Calum jump slightly and turn around from where he’s been standing, staring at the jukebox. The green haired boy he saw with the blonde one a few months ago has appeared from the back room, only he doesn’t have green hair anymore. Now it’s red, very red, and he has a piercing calum doesn’t think he had the last time he saw him. “And you brought Kiwi.” Ashton nods and walks over to the counter, sitting down on a bar stool, motioning for Calum to do the same.
