Calum doesn’t know why he’s doing this. He has no clue to why he’s here. Hell, he doesn’t even know Michael that well. If anyone should be here it’s Ashton, because Ashton knows Michael the best. Calum doesn’t, he hardly ever talks to the punk with the tattoos, the piercing and the brightly colored hair. The only reason they’ve even been seen together is that Ashton and Luke, their best friends, know each other, but that doesn’t mean Calum and Michael has to be friends. And now that he think about it, Michael doesn’t seem to be very close to Ashton either, it’s more like Ashton drags him along for those lunch hours.

But none of that matters now, because here he is, standing just behind a car, out of sight,  looking at the white house further down the street, watching as the boy who isn’t his friend unlocks his door and enters the house. And Calum, once again, finds himself questioning himself. Why the hell is he there? What does it matter to him if Michael didn’t seem quite as happy as usual today, what does it matter if maybe, maybe he missed that laugh that normally annoys the shit out of him? Why did that make him take another way home after school, why did that make him walk for another twenty minutes, in the rain, just for this. Michael shows no signs of feeling followed, he doesn’t look over his shoulder as he opens the door, enters and closes it again. He could’ve been tired, that might have been it all, and Calum would have wasted at least an hour on nothing. He sighs and starts walking again, feeling like an idiot because he just assumed he would find something out if he just followed Michael home. That’s just creepy, he realises that now, and it makes him feel so so stupid.

As he walks past the big, white house he hears something that makes him stop dead in his tracks. Even though the door is closed he can hear loud sobs coming from somewhere inside the house, and seeing that there’s no cars in the driveway and that Michael’s an only child there’s not a lot of people it could be coming from. So he does what anyone would do, at least that’s what he’d like to think, he turns around and runs up to the front door, almost running into it before stopping and knocking on it.

“Michael!” he doesn’t get an answer but he can hear the sobs clearer now and there’s no doubt it’s Michael, so he opens the door.

He notices Michael right away, the smaller boy is sitting on the floor in the livingroom, that just so happens to be right in front of the door. He’s sitting next to what looks like a dog bed and has his knees pulled up to his chest, looking nothing like the boy Calum knows from school.

“I’m sorry, I’m so so sorry but I can’t...I can’t ma- can’t make it better. I can’t.” Calum slowly moves further into the house and when he enters the livingroom he notices the dog laying in the bed. The dog lifts it’s head and looks at Calum, but there’s no energy left in the dark eyes, no life. michael however, he doesn’t seem to notice him at all. “I’m so sorry Federer, I can’t make it better.”

“Michael?” Calum hates himself for how weak his voice sounds, hates how it sounds like he’s thirteen again. Michael’s head snaps up and their eyes meet, brown meeting green, surrounded by red.

“He’s-...he’s dying and there’s no-nothing I can do.” Michael tries to hold back the sobs that shakes his whole body and Calum doesn’t hesitate, he walks over and sits down, pulling Michael closer and letting him hide his face in his shirt, letting him soak it with his tears. Calum’s never had a pet, he has no idea what Michael’s going through, but he knows what it’s like to feel helpless, he knows just how awful that is, and so he sits there, waiting for Michael to calm down, watching as the poodle next to them struggles to breathe. It amazes him, how the dog, who clearly knows he’s not going to make it, still watches Michael with a worried look in his eyes, still puts his owner first.

It’s been an hour since Calum got there and he’s still sitting on the floor in the livingroom, but he’s no longer trying to comfort Michael. Instead he’s watching how Michael tries his best to comfort Federer, who’s laying with his head on Michael’s lap.

“don’t fall asleep just yet buddy.” Michael whispers. “let the angels wait for just a moment, stay with me.” it kills Calum, it really does, watching someone he’s always considered strong and not really heartless but somewhere close to it, break down completely. “forget the world outside, focus on me okay? There’s no need to be afraid, I’m right here. I’ll always be right here I promise.” Michael runs his fingers through the fur on Federer’s head and the dog reaches out to lick his hand, making Michael cry even harder. “remember.” he whispers when he’s calmed down again. “remember all the days we spent out on the farm together, how we’d run around and mess with people just for the fun of it. And remember when you started chasing that cat and you ran into the pond?” Calum isn’t sure if Michael’s still talking to the dog or if he’s just saying everything that comes to mind in an attempt to calm himself down, but he knows better than to ask questions. “we can go there again buddy, we can go back and relive everything because we were meant to be best friends, it was written in the stars that we would pick you.” Calum doesn’t say anything, he doesn’t move, but he feels and somehow he knows that it’s just him and Michael now. Michael knows too, Calum can tell he does, but another broken whisper still escapes his lips. “don’t fall asleep yet, please don’t leave me.” but Federer is gone and Calum carefully moves over to Michael, he picks up the dog and carries him back to the dog bed before sitting back down next to Michael and pulling him into his lap, once again letting him cry into his shoulder.
