~ So this is another one of those where I just try to put words on what I'm feeling and it probably doesn't make sense at all

Dedicated to @RideOnMuke98 because I love your book (oops) and you definitely deserve more reads :) ily xx /M ~

“Molly!” the wind seems to rip the words from Luke’s lips and throw them out in the dark, not bringing any answers back to him. The rain somehow manages to find it’s way through the thin jacket he’s wearing and makes him shiver. “Molly please come back inside!” he whistles, hoping maybe it’ll be heard over the wind, but no dog comes running towards him, there’s no barking and tail wagging. All he hears is the wind and his mum calling for him, telling him to come back inside, telling him there’s no point in him getting sick, telling him Molly will come back. And he does as she tells him, but he knows she doesn’t understand. Molly’s been his best friend for fourteen years now and of course he’s gonna stay out looking for her when she’s run off into a storm. She wouldn’t have questioned it if Ashton or Calum or Michael had been the one missing, or Ben or Jack, but it’s not. It’s Molly and she can’t even call for help.

Luke lays awake, he lays in bed listening to the rain hitting the glass and the wind howling outside, and he waits. He doesn’t pray, he wishes he could but when you don’t believe in god there’s no point in praying. So he just waits, and at three am he finally hears the dog door swing back in place and the clicking of short claws on the floor. The door to his room opens a little and when he turns the light on she’s there, sitting on the floor in the middle of the room. She’s wet but that’s not what bothers Luke, what bothers him is that when she tries to walk she’s limping and even though she can’t speak Luke can tell she’s in pain.

“Hey Molly, hey girl, come here.” he slips out of bed and sits down on the cold floor, watching how Molly slowly stands up and walks over to him, growling when she accidentally puts weight on her left hind leg. “Hey girl, what’s wrong.” she sits down next to Luke, putting her head on his lap and looks at him with big tired eyes. “are you hurt baby girl?” he whispers, even though it’s obvious that she is. “don’t worry, we’ll take you to the vet tomorrow, you’ll be alright in no time.” he carefully picks her up and places her on his lap and that’s how they stay for the rest of the night, until his mum pushes the door open just after six, just like she always does when she gets up in the morning, and finds them there. After that everything feels like a blur to Luke, people come and people go, they’re in a car and then they’re somewhere else for a while before getting back in the car and returning home. He returned to his room, carrying the scared and hurt dog, and sat back down on the floor. At first it felt good, knowing they now had something they could do to make her feel better, but it wasn’t enough. the vet’s answers hadn’t been satisfying. Luke didn’t want to hear maybes and mights, he wanted to know that things definitely would get better, not that they might just put her through unnecessary pain.

He didn’t think anyone noticed as the days went by, thought he managed to hide it from his friends, but they saw. They saw how his eyes would tear up when he’d fall silent, when he’d be left alone with his thoughts. They saw how he’d just push his food around on the plate, how he’d sit and stare out the window. He didn’t think they saw, since they didn’t ask and questions. He didn’t want to tell them, didn’t even want to tell his Mikey. Molly was his best friend, she’d never been close to any of them, and he didn’t want their pity, didn’t want them to act different around him. They did act different around him, they watched him with worried eyes and tried to think of something to say, but he was too caught up in his own mind to notice.

And then the day came when he didn’t show up from school, when they sat alone in the caféteria wondering. Michael, being the one closest to Luke’s family, received a text from Jack about halfway through lunch and then they knew. They knew what had been bothering Luke, why he was so sad. Michael didn’t waste any time on telling the teachers where he went, he didn’t bother telling anyone else, he just got up, grabbed his bag and left school, getting in his car and driving over to Luke’s place. When he got there he was met by sad faces, familiar people who looked so different from what he was used to. Luke wasn’t the only one who’d lost someone, they’d all lost a family member. But they let him in and he walked through the house to the backyard, where his boyfriend of seven months was kneeling in front of a small pile of dirt. Michael didn’t know what to say, he didn’t know what to do, so he just sat down next to Luke, taking one of his cold hands in his and holding it, waiting. They didn’t care about the cold rain, Luke didn’t even notice, or about the dirt, they just sat there until Luke was ready to get up and go inside. By that time it was almost completely dark and if the sun had been out at all it would have set, but Luke didn’t notice that either. He just walked into the bathroom with Michael following him, got undressed and stepped into the shower. that’s when he started crying, leaning against the shower wall he cried so hard he almost fell, and Michael stepped in as well, still dressed, and held him. He held him and cried a little as well, because seeing Luke hurting was so painful, but he held him. He stood there and hugged Luke until he didn’t have any tears left to cry. After that they finished showering in silence, Michael not seeing any point in getting out and waiting for his turn since he already was soaked, and walked back to Luke’s room. They got dressed and climbed into bed, still without a word being spoken between the two, and it was like that, with Michael’s arms wrapped around him and his chest as a pillow, fingers slowly running through his hair, that Luke, hours later, fell asleep while listening to the sound of falling rain.
