“Luke? Luke! Please open your eyes! Goddamnit Luke open your fucking eyes!” heat, intense heat and a voice filled with panic, are the first things Luke’s aware off. “No I’m sorry, I’m sorry just please please wake up, I wanna see those gorgeous eyes of yours and it’d be great if you could wake up now because we need to get out of here.” Luke groans and opens his eyes, staring up at the clear night sky. He soon starts coughing and becomes aware of the thick smoke coming from the car he’s laying next to.
“Michael?” he sits up, hissing in pain when small pieces of glass dig into his palms. “Michael?” Luke pulls off a piece of his shirt, using it to cover his face.
“over here!” he turns around, trying to see through the smoke, and after what feels like forever he finally sees Michael, less than four feet away from him. “I hurt my leg, I don’t know if I can walk.” Luke walks over to him, helping him get on his feet, and they start walking away from the burning car. They don’t get far though, not before the car explodes, sending them flying to the ground.
“Fuck, shit! Michael they’re coming! I don’t know what they are but they’re coming!” Luke gets up again and pulls Michael to his feet, but the shorter guy stumbles and falls to the ground again, crying out in pain.
“I can’t! I can’t... fuck I think it’s broken. Jesus christ it hurts!” Michael’s trying his best to keep the tears from falling but Luke can tell he’s going to start crying any minute now. “Fuck Luke just go! Run!”
“No! There’s no way I’m leaving you here Michael, they’re going to break through that barrier any moment now and you’ll be a gonner.” Luke takes Michael’s hand again, helping him get back on his feet. “we just have to get out of here and then we’ll find a safe place.” another man suddenly appears next to them.
“hey, hey I’ll help you okay? You take him and you run and I’ll keep them away from you.” The man’s wearing a bandana around his head, using it to keep the smoke from his mouth and nose, but his brown eyes seems honest and Luke nods, picking Michael up bridal style. “Run towards the river, there’s a boat. It’ll take us across to a safe place.”
“Wait! Why are you helping us? What’s your name?” Michael asks, wrapping his arms around Luke’s neck. “Why didn’t you just run past us? When they break through you’d have a better chance of getting away if we’re out here, if I’m still here. They’d go for me first.” he feels Luke hold him a little tighter, as if to tell him that he’s not about to leave him alone.
“I’m Calum. And we’re still human, well except for those of us that’s been infected, and it’d be inhuman to leave you out here, and maybe we’ll manage better as a group?” the man, Calum, shrugs. “it just felt like the right thing to do.” he pulls out a gun from somewhere, handing it to Luke. “here, I’ve got another one. Run towards the river and I’ll try to keep them off your back.” Luke nods, not wanting to waste anymore time out here with...whatever they are threatening to break through the barrier of burning cars at any moment, and gets a better grip of both Michael and the gun before starting to run, following close behind Calum.

They’re halfway down the street when Luke hears the screaming, the running. He slows down for a moment to take a look over his shoulder, immediately wishing he hadn’t. The still look human, but there’s nothing human about the noises coming from the creatures moving towards them.
“Run man! I’ve got this. Just run and I’ll catch up with you later.” Calum turns back around, running towards the creatures, and Luke keeps running in the other direction, holding Michael close to his body. The older boy is keeping an eye on what’s happening behind them, wishing he’d had a weapon but knowing it probably would have been useless.
“Look Michael!” Luke’s voice makes him turn forward again and relief washes over him when he sees the man standing ahead of them, wearing what looks like an army uniform. “we’re almost there, we’ll get help.” Luke slows down, still holding Michael in his arms as he walks towards the man. “Hey! Hey we’re safe, we’re not sick.”
“Stop right there!” The man suddenly pulls out a machine gun, aiming at them.
“Come on mate, please. My boyfriend, he’s hurt. I think he’s broken his leg.” the man lowers his weapon again and picks up what looks like a walkie talkie, calling for someone.
“What about Calum? Are we just going to leave him out there?” Michael asks, looking up at Luke. “he probably saved our life, it’s not right if we just leave him.” Luke nods, not taking his eyes off the man in front of them.
“We’ll come back for him, if he doesn’t show up soon we’ll get you to safety and then we’ll come back for him alright?” Luke thinks he feels Michael nod, but he doesn’t want to risk taking his eyes off the man to check.
“but sir...they’re no more than kids...they...yes sir.” the man puts the walkie down again and Luke takes a step forward, but before he gets a chance to say something the man lifts his gun again, aiming at them.
“no man, come on. Please.” Luke backs off again, but the man keeps his gun raised. “please.” he’s too far away to be able to tell for sure, but Luke could have sworn he saw something, maybe regret, in the mans face as he pulled the trigger. Luke turns around to run but he trips over something and falls, losing his grip of Michael as they roll down a hill, bullets still flying around them. When he finally stops moving, Luke opens his eyes. His arm hurts a hell of a lot and he’s pretty sure he’s been hit, but he forgets about that as he rolls around, finding that the man is standing right next to him with the gun pointed at him. “please man, just let us go.” before the man gets a chance to answer, a loud bang is heard and he falls to the ground, unseeing eyes staring up at the sky.
“told you I’d catch up to you.” Calum walks over to the man he just killed and picks up his gun, hanging it over his back before starting to go through the man’s pockets. Luke slowly sits up and is just about to walk over to him when he hears the crying. He spins around, trying to find the source of it, and his eyes widen when he does.
“No. No no no, baby no.” he rushes over to Michael, who’s laying on his back with his hands on his stomach, trying to stop the blood flow from the gunshot wound. “move your hands Michael, let me fix this.”
“it hurts Lukey, it really hurts.” Michael’s green eyes meet with Luke’s blue ones and Luke carefully moves his hands, covering the wound with his own, larger hands. “it hurts so bad.” slowly, Michael’s eyes closes again.
“hey, come on Mikey look at me, open your eyes and look at me.” he pleads, keeping the pressure on the wound. “come on baby, open your eyes again, let me see your beautiful eyes.” nothing happens and realisation hits Luke like a train. “no, no Mikey no!” he moves his hands, pulling the smaller by into his lap and rocking him back and forth. “come back to me, please please come back. I’ll do anything just please open your eyes.”
“Luke he’s...he’s gone, we have to keep moving.” a hand on his shoulder, but Luke barely feels it. “Man I’m sorry, I really am but we have to go. They’re coming.”
“no, no I can’t leave him, he’s supposed to wake up. It wasn’t supposed to go like this! we were supposed to get married and have kids and fight over stupid things and grow old together, it wasn’t supposed to go like this!” Luke’s full on sobbing now, holding Michael’s dead body close to his chest. Behind him, Calum’s desperately trying to think of something, trying to decide what to do.
“I’m sorry about this mate, I really am.” Luke doesn’t hear him, but he does feel the gun hit the back of his head. It’s not enough to knock him out, but he’s not capable of resisting when Calum picks him up, throwing him over his shoulder, before he starts to walk away from Michael, leaving the small, fragile body in the dirt. And Luke closes his eyes, hoping, praying that he’ll wake up in his own bed, that this will all just be a dream. But it isn’t.
