I slowly inhale and exhale. I look around the room, the walls are a pearl white color. A bookcase filled with what else books, diplomas on the walls. I take off my black converse and tuck my feet underneath me on the couch. I pinch my thigh and feel a dull ache. Finally I look at the woman sitting a little aways from me. She is sitting on a flowery chair like one a grandmother would usually have and she gives me a small smile.
"Whenever you're ready..." She looks down at my file. "Meredi-"
"Winter" I say quickly. "My name is Winter." I exhale loudly.
"Alright then. Thats a beautiful name. It's nice to meet you. You can call me Dr. Hoffman or Mrs. Hoffman if you feel more comfortable calling me that."
I nodded. "Okay." I whispered.
"Now do you want to tell me why you're here?"
"Don't you already know? Isn't that in your file there?"
"Why don't you tell me why you're here?"
"I want to talk."
"About what Winter?"
"Anything.......Everything"
"Don't you have someone who you can talk to at home? Surely there must be someone you trust? Your mother?"
I shook my head furiously and clenched my hands into fists, my nails digging into my palms. "I trust no one."
"Oh, well that's too bad. Are you sure there isn't anybody you can trust? Anyone at all?"
I shook my head again.
"Okay then, that's what I'm here for Winter. She reached over and placed a hand on my knee, I could feel the warmth of her hand. It was uncomfortable. My heart beat rapidly and I gasped uncontrollably. I looked outside and saw the clouds gather and it began to rain. I looked at the little droplets of water fall down one after another. My heart calmed a bit.
"Winter, are you alright?" Dr. Hoffman looked at me concerned.
"Can I? Can I open the window?" I gulped down saliva.
"Um yes, alright."
I jumped up and quickly walked over to the window and pushed it open. A rush of wind flowed in and I smelled the rain. I loved the rain, the way it felt against my skin as soft drops, how the water seemed to cleanse not only her soul but the earth. After a rain shower, the smell of the earth was so clean and new that it would always make Winter smile. She went back down to sit on the couch and she looked at Dr. Hoffman.
"Can you tell me what just happened?"
Winter rolled up her sleeves of her sweater to feel the coldness of the wind. "I don't like heat, warmth in general."
"Why is that?"
"It makes me feel stifled and heavy."
"And you like the rain?"
I nodded enthusiastically.
"How does the rain make you feel?"
"It feels..... like as if I'm being remade anew, nothing that happened before can hurt me. I feel cold and numb from any bad thought or feeling."
"Do you have a lot of these bad thoughts and feelings?"
"Sometimes. When- I get triggered that's when-"
"Do you want to talk about that?"
"Not yet."
"Alright tell me when you do. How about you tell me what are your hobbies?"
"Um, I like to read and I like to draw and write, listen to music, watch tv. "
"Why is it that you read?"
"I like to forget."
"Forget about what? What is it that needs to be forgotten?"
" When I read, for a small while. I forget how my life is and all that matters is the character in the book and how their life is like." I heard her scribble madly into her clipboard.
"What kind of books do you like to read about?"
"Mostly romance, fantasy."
"What is it that you like about those books?"
" They always have a happy ending, the girl always gets to be with the guy of her dreams and they live happily ever after."
"You don't think you'll have a happily ever after?"
"Life doesn't work that way."
"Sometimes it does, if you think positive and be happy."
"Not for me. I'm not allowed to."
"Why?"
"I don't know."
She nodded but said nothing. "Winter? Does anyone know you're here?"
"No."
"Not even your parents."
"Especially not them."
" Are you right handed, Winter?"
"Yes, why?"
She pointed at my left inner arm. I looked down and saw the white scar across my wrist.
"Do you cut yourself,Winter?"
"Only once."
"Why is that?"
"I wanted to have a reminder, that can't be forgotten."
A timer went off and I jumped up startled.
"I'm sorry." Dr. Hoffman turned it off. "It looks like our time is up."
I nodded and headed for the door.
"You know Winter, this was a very productive first session. Not a lot of patients open up as much as you did today. I hope that I'll see you Wednesday to talk more."
"Alright."
"You hide yourself behind walls Winter, you should let someone in. you never know how much it will help you until you do."
