Manhattan, New York
Gripping my best friend Li Zhen's hands tightly, I gazed around the beautifully appointed waiting room.
"Shancai, are you sure about this? You don't have to do this for me. I'm sure there are other ways for me to ---"
I squeezed my friend's hand before she could continue. "I'm very sure, Zhen. I want to do this for you. You are my best friend, more than a sister even. I would do anything for you, just like I know you would for me," I said as I looked into her eyes that glistened with unshed tears.
"You don't know how grateful I am for what you're doing Shancai. I will forever be indebted to you. Thank you so much."
As I nodded to her with a watery smile, I heard my name called. I turned to see a nurse standing next to us, wearing a kind smile.
"It's time."
Li Zhen gave me a tight hug and I clung to her for a moment before I stood up on shaky legs.
After one last glance at Li Zhen, I followed the nurse until we arrived in front of an open door. She gave me a patient robe to change into before leaving the room.
Taking a deep breath, my eyes fell on the monitor next to the examination bed. I saw my name on the display along with two words jumping out at me: egg retrieval.

Shanghai, China 7 years later
"Shancai, it's great to see you here."
I was standing inside the massive auditorium, watching the hive of activity before me, when I heard and recognized Hua Ze Lei's voice.
I turned with a ready smile on my face. It's incredible how quickly I warmed up to him after only one meeting.
"Hi Lei, great to see you too."
Appreciating the tall, well-dressed handsome man giving me a dimpled smile, I have to admit I was attracted to him the first time I met him.
There's something so gentle and calming about him that immediately put me at ease.
"So, how are you liking the set up so far? I know you had some concerns about the filming environment and the people who will be working with ---"
"Uncle Lei!"
An ecstatic yell cut the rest of his words.
Before I knew it, a small body slammed into me unexpectedly. I lost my balance and would have fallen if not for Lei's quick reflexes.
Concerned for the little person that had glued itself to me, I immediately looked down.
My heart twitched when I saw a pair of beautiful and large almond-shaped eyes welling with tears. I instinctively fell down to my haunches to make sure he's alright.
"It's okay, baby. Are you hurt?", I asked gently as I gave him a quick perusal to make sure he's okay.
