——

"He who returns from his journey is not the same as he who had left."

It was the first trip of its kind. It was going to be just him and his mother traveling alone to visit his mother's family and his new cousins.

He had dozed off before he was awoken by the shouts of unfamiliar voices and the aggressive jolting of their carriage.

He looked at his mother whose cool facade had broken and whose eyes looked terrified.

Suddenly his frame of reference shifted as he was thrown from where he was sitting and hit the ground hard.

——

As his body was thrown from the carriage, his short life flashed before his eyes.

----

He was born a son of an esteemed court scholar and an educated noblewoman.

They lived in the vibrant capital of Kaifeng alongside his elder sister, Daoming Zhuang, and countless servants.

The slightly curved roof and beautifully carved wooden doors, windows and ceilings in the chonggong and zaojing style of their island oasis made it the most beautiful home in Kaifeng.

The luscious gardens and their koi pond were his favorite parts of his home as they were an escape.

From his window, he could see the tops of brightly colored pagodas reaching into the distance, sights he could see and paint but could never visit.

As the black-head gate, the wutou men, at the front of their property separated him from the rest of the world.

It was a status symbol as only the top ranking officials could build one, but he never felt power when he looked at it for it was the highly decorated wall of his cage.

He was educated in the way befitting a child of one of the most esteemed Song Dynasty scholars.

He learnt everything from the teachings of Buddism, Daoism and Neo-Confucianism to reading, writing, calligraphy and the company of the "nine guests".

His sister an ally to the frequently dull lessons, his favorite tutor was his grandfather's assistant, Yu Sao.

She had been with the family since before he was born and was more of a mother figure to him than his own. There was no rhyme or reason to what she taught him as she taught whatever interested her or interested them.
