20th Taikonaut to be sent in space.

This was Dao Ming Si's only thought as he sat with eight more Taikonauts at the China National Space Administration headquarters in Haidian District, Beijing. His head was bowed as he clasped his hands together on his lap while waiting for the announcement of who would commandeer the Shenzhou 15 space mission of the Shenzhou program.

He looked around him and couldn't help but compare himself to some of his competition, who had all equally proven themselves to be worthy of crewing the spaceflight. Ever since he watched a video of an unmanned satellite being launched into space when he was little, he already dreamt of going to space. To him, interstellar voyage was his purpose and if he wasn't chosen for this particular mission, he knew he'd wait until his time came.

He kept thinking about all the years of hard work that he put into his training and all the skills he had to acquire even after being qualified into the program for his experience as a pilot. He remembered every missed family gathering, forgotten birthdays, neglected party invites and yes, even lost love. The weight of what this day would soon mean to him burdened him far worse than any other training he had to go through. He was never really someone who yearned for validation, but today didn't seem like a bad day to get one.

"Hey," someone suddenly whispered behind his back. "Can I talk to you for a while?"

Dao Ming Si turned around and saw his good friend, Hua Ze Lei, standing behind him, one hand placed on his right shoulder.

"But the program is about to start, can't it wait?" Si asked.

"Well, I'd say it could, but it really couldn't. Also trust me, we have time," Lei replied.

"How ominous. Alright."

They walked in silence to the corridor outside of the room. When they closed the door, Lei's facial expression changed drastically and he pulled Si to a strategic corner where they wouldn't be captured by the cameras.

"Whoa, what are you doing?" Si said, breaking free from Lei's grip.

"They're going to choose you," Lei announced with conviction.

Si was in shock. "What?! What... How... What are you talking about? Also, can you calm down? You look like you've been run over by a train."

"Listen to me. Just listen first! Because we only have five minutes max before someone goes out of that room to look for you. It's probably going to be Ximen, he's been assigned to monitor you today. Or Meizuo, that guy's paranoid," Lei anxiously said while surveying their quiet surroundings.

"What are you saying? Why would someone monitor me?"

"I've known for a while, and I tried to be quiet about it, I really did. But you deserve better because you're a great Taikonaut and you're an outstanding pilot and you shouldn't be sent to space for a suicide mission."
