"Do you believe in mermaids, Daoming Si?" the magistrate asked the new mayor.

"I don't," came the young man's reply.

With a sinister laugh, the magistrate invited him to go down the beach to one of its caves.

"I will show you something you would never forget until you die."

"Come, come, Mayor. Hurry!"

"This better be good, magistrate," Daoming Si replied, a hint of annoyance in his voice.

"Oh, but this is definitely going to be worth your while," the magistrate told him gleefully, "I'm pretty sure of it."

"It better be," the mayor muttered under his breath, a scowl marring his face. "My time is importa—" he suddenly stopped, eyes going wide, just as he entered the cave where the magistrate kept his most prized possession.

"Tada! What did I tell you? This is definitely worth your while, isn't she?" The magistrate grinned menacingly. "Hence why I told you that you cannot touch me and impose that tax you want out of my business. This creature right here, as you can see, cowers before me. That's how much power I have."

And true enough - when the magistrate stepped up to the creature, this... mermaid, who hid her face in her arms littered with deep cuts, flinched so visibly, suddenly afraid.

Daoming Si quickly felt his blood boil. He realized that the magistrate and his men were whipping and beating this lovely little thing, no - woman, for her tears that became pearls, if the stories he heard were true. They then sold these pearls for a small fortune.

He took a deep breath and closed his eyes, counting from one to ten in his head to calm his sudden raging anger.

Once he opened them, he directed his icy glare towards the magistrate and in a nonchalant yet low and quiet voice said, "I believe the emperor should be informed about this."

"The e-emperor?" The magistrate stuttered, his earlier confidence immediately gone.

Daoming Si nodded. "After all, the sea from which you took this... mermaid from is his, isn't that right? It's only appropriate that he learns of this... theft from his property."

As the magistrate started to plead with him not to let the emperor know lest he face a certain death for punishment, Daoming Si smirked inwardly.

He turned towards the lovely creature and was surprised to find her staring at him, her doe eyes shining with unshed tears.
