Reassurance & Doubts

I was sitting on the battle field, nervously biting my velvety bottom lip.

Blood, corpses and weapons laid before my eyes.

I wasn't sure how long I had been here, just sitting in the grass, but I'm sure I've been here awhile.

My blood stained sword was in my gloved hands and just the sight of the blood made me sick. I sigh heavily.

"Hey Jesse."

I turn my head towards the voice.

"Hey Olivia," I greet softly.

Olivia sits down beside me and gazes at the bloody field.

"That fight was pretty bad," Olivia says, fiddling with her thumbs.

"Yeah...," I drift off and gaze at my gleamning sword.

"Hey... Are you OK Jesse?" Olivia asks me, her gaze holding concern.

"I'm fine," I say, quickly brushing her off.

Olivia raises her eyebrow, but thankfully she doesn't push it any further.

"We sure got lucky... Our allies came at the right moment it's kinda ironic really. But I'm afraid we wouldn't have won if they didn't arrive when they did," Olivia says, glancing up at me.

I glance at her thoughtfully.

"We were outnumbered pretty badly," I say and Olivia nods.

"Yeah and we weren't ready for that," Olivia says.

I nod slowly and shift a little.

Our allies weren't here anymore which kinda bothered me actually.

They left as soon as they came, but they did say they'd be back as soon as possible.

Things pop up and I understand that, but I question it of course. But it's not like I can do a thing about it, so I'll just have to wait until they get back I guess.

Besides, since they left it gives me more time to think about some things.

I glance at Olivia as she speaks.

"..I don't know how much more of this we can take Jesse. They've been damaging our forces pretty bad lately and I'm afraid we won't win if this keeps up," She says.

I feel my chestnut hair blow in the wind and I hate to admit it, but she's right.

There's only so many blows that we can take before we eventually collapse, but we can still win if we play this smart.... Right?

"We just need a better strategy that's all," I say. I try to sound reassuring, but the raspiness of my voice definitely fails me.

"I don't even think that would help against them," She says and sighs.

I clear my throat and smile weakly before saying, "Hey don't give up just yet."

"That's extremely difficult," Olivia says, glancing at me, "Besides this situation seems pretty hopeless to me."

I stay quiet. I hate to agree once again, but it's honestly really hard to stay optimistic about this.

Silence falls between us and after awhile Olivia breaks it.

"Alright Jesse," She says as she stands up. "I should go see how Petra's holding up."

I nod and smile warmly. "See ya later Olivia."

"Yup see ya Jesse," She says and begins walking away.

My smile falters and I gaze down at my lap as the wind plays with my hair.

How did we even come to this?

I feel like ripping my hair out. Everything's so overwhelming.

There's always a suprise attack that throws us off. Or it's when were distracted by something.

I close my eyes.

Maybe that's the problem. Were constantly getting distracted.

But we can't exactly avoid that either.

I sigh.

I honestly don't know if we'll win. I mean the chances are rather slim and things aren't really going in our direction right now.

But.... Can we do this? Can we really pull this off?

I.... I hope we can, but sadly I have my doubts.
