Getting to spend time with Connor was a rare occasion we both cherished because we knew how special that time was. I was aware of that even more than he was, since I knew that not only my time with him was limited, but that my time on earth was also probably coming to its end.
Whenever my mother would say something against it I would try my best to make her feel guilty for making me work and not giving me the help I deserved. Manipulating her was making me feel horrible about myself but at least it was giving me what I wanted.
"Celestia, I want you to stop seeing that boy." She stated after she saw me getting ready in front of a mirror in the hallway and asked me where I was going.
"What boy?"
"You know exactly what boy. That dirty little... Oh, I don't even know his name. He's that irrelevant."
"His name is Connor, mom." I turned around. "And what do you have against him?"
"His name is not important to me. And what is important to me is your wellbeing. He could destroy your career."
"How?!"
"There are so many beautiful young guys who would love to be with you. And you choose... Ugh."
"It's my life, mom. Besides, we're just friends."
"That's what I used to say about your father. And we all know what happened in the end..."
"What happened?"
"Well... You."
"I don't think it makes sense to compare the two of us."
"Oh, so you think you're better than me, huh?"
"Yeah, I'd say that." I was done with my makeup and I grabbed my purse and put it on my shoulder.
"Wait, you can't leave!"
"Why? Connor is waiting for me in front of the house. Tell me one good reason I should stay."
"He's not right for you!" I laughed as much as I could because I knew she was dead serious about it and she had no other reason than the fact he wasn't successful. At least not in the way she preferred.
"I'll see you tonight. Don't wait up!" I tried kissing her on the cheek but she moved away.
"I hope it won't be too late for you when you finally get to realize your mistakes."
I closed the door trying to leave all of the negativity inside with her where it belonged but she always somehow succeeded in transferring her bad mood onto me.
But once I saw Connor waiting behind the fence and a smile that appeared on his face once he saw me I felt like nothing could ruin my mood anymore.
When I came to the fence he grabbed it.
"This feels like a prison."
"If only you could know what it feels like from this side of the fence." He noticed thinking about that has made me upset.
I opened the fence and he seemed like he didn't know what he was supposed to do now, so he just spread his arms wide.
"Is that how you say hello?" I smiled.
"Only special people." He still held his arms up in the air. I enjoyed seeing him uncomfortable. But he seemed to like it in a way.
"So there's more of special people in your life?"
"If there was anyone else special, would that really make you that special?"
I embraced him and he put his hands around me. He had no idea how much I needed this.
