You are probably wondering why my title is " Hooked On Dat Korean Shit." Just so you know, I'm laughing as I write this, it's great.
So earlier today, my mom comes into my room, and I don't really know why. And I'm doing the usual, reading Harry Potter while listening to k-pop. Ok, before I go on, you need a little backstory on my parents.
My parents are homophobic, racist, sexist, strict, and very conservative. I'm more open-minded, liberal, a peace maker. I'm definitely quirky, and my mostly conservative family looks down on me for thinking differently ( they think I'm republican and a conservative, lol, no). I'm more of a centrist with some democratic beliefs. The only person who I can relate to is my older sister, who got me into kpop.
Anyways, they know I like k-pop, but they...disapprove of it. Their theory is quite basic really, it's " Y'all can't understand dat korean music dos peeps are sangin about. How bout you listen to some normal pop that all the kids are listening to these days. Or at least some good ole country music."
Excuse Me ( what up B.A.P reference!)
( pukes into a bag, chokes on vomit, dies)
Kidding! I'm alive! I'm a werewolf :D
Naega Wolf Naega Wolf, AWOOOOOOOOOO.
" If your a werewolf, then why did you make a vampire story?!" Says random idiot.
( throws the dictionary at the idiots face.) Shuddup.
If theirs one type of music I can't stand more than American pop, it's country. I don't know, I just don't like that twang when they sing, how every song is a sappy song, even the upbeat ones! It's just...ugh don't even go there.
Anyways, back to the story. So she hears the music, it was Warrior and it was Zelo's rap where he goes really fast ajsdfghjkl and we can't keep up cause he's going so fast on that part. And then my mom scowls at me and says,
" Why are you hooked on that Korean shit, you can't even understand it."
And she storms out while I am sitting there wondering whether to laugh or to facepalm. I did both. That statement was worthy enough for both to be done.
Look, K-Pop is music, not cocaine or dope. If you want to see someone on cocaine go to Miley Cyrus, and if you want some on crack, go to Justin Bieber or any mainstream rapper ( not all of them..but most of them.) And I find it funny she put it like that, kpop is one of the cleanest genres of music, and then she compares it to be hooked on crack.
The main point of this is, people don't consider it to be music because it's sang in Korean. It's got singing, dancing, rapping, a good beat...yep pretty sure it's music. Why does the language matter? Does a song in Spanish, or French, or German, make it any less of a song.
America has this big headed idea that music has to be in English. It doesn't, my favorite song isn't in English, and that's only one example. The language doesn't make it less of of a song, or less enjoyable. No, I don't understand it, that's why I look up something called:
English Captions :D
They make it seem like it's the hardest thing ever to find the English lyrics, it's not. I could google, " 2NE1 English lyrics to I Am The Best." And poof, this weird thing called the Internet shows instant results to the English lyrics. How strange that it is.
The point is, it doesn't matter if you can't understand it, either enjoy it and have no idea what they are saying, learn Korean, look up English lyrics, or get the fuck out I KNOW you can't understand it, now stop bitching about how you can't understand it, unless you speak Korean!
