'I can take so muchUntil I've had enough
'Cause I'm only human
And I bleed when I fall down
I'm only human
And I crash and I break down
Your words in my head, knives in my heart
You build me up and then I fall apart
'Cause I'm only human'
I could hear my heart pounding in my ears as the song ended and I hit my ending pose. Sweat was pouring down my face and I could feel my muscles begin to relax as I finished the dance. I have been practicing this solo for two weeks now and It's still not perfect. I was half a count late on my pique turns, and I didn't elongate my arms enough in my arabesque.
"Play it again please Deliah!" I shouted at the girl standing next to the stereo system. She nodded back at me and restarted the song.
'I can hold my breath
I can bite my tongue
I can stay awake for days
If that's what you want
Be your number one
I can fake a smile
I can force a laugh
I can dance and play the part
If that's what you ask
Give you all I am
I can do it
I can do it
I can do it....'
Perfect! Pique on cue! I could feel a small smile stretch across my lips as I hit the timing correctly, but I quickly wiped it off so I could stay in character. I heard the door close, but didn't bother to see who it was. I figured it was Ms. Mack, my dance instructor. I continued on with the dance, hitting everything exactly how I'm supposed to, this is the best I have ever danced this routine. As I hit my final position, and let out the final breath so that my chest would visibly contract I heard three distinctive sets of hands clapping. I knew it wasn't Ms. Mack, she never claps.
I looked up in the mirror and met a very captivating pair of gray eyes. Elliot Voss. What is he doing here? How did I not notice him there?
"Deliah, are you ready?" He asked the 12 year old girl that was helping me out today.
"Do I have to go? Athena is finally getting it and she's incredible to watch. I don't want to miss anything." She said to the boy who has yet to take his eyes off of me.
"Sorry, D. Mark said he wants to go get ice cream, so let's go." He said finally looking away from me. Mark is his best friend and the final person in the studio.
"Yeah! Come on mini Voss, I need some cookies and cream, like an hour ago." Mark chimed in.
She groaned, but gathered her gear anyway. "Can Athena come with us?" She asked Elliot, who I'm assuming is her brother considering their last names.
"Oh, no that's okay Deliah." I said "My dad has been away for a few weeks and he comes back tomorrow so I have to get home and make sure everything is cleaned up and stuff." I told her, already dreading tomorrow.
"Oh, okay." She looked down clearly upset.
"I really appreciate the offer though, maybe next time?" I asked placing a hand on her drooping shoulder hoping it'll cheer her up at least a little bit.
It seemed to work because she looked up at me with a bright cheery smile and nodded her head excitedly before pulling me into a tight hug. "I won't be at practice tomorrow because we are moving into the new house, but I will be back here Monday at 2:30 Okay?" She said when she pulled away. I nodded and she and the boys walked out. Elliot looked at me one more time before slightly shaking his head as if trying to get rid of a thought and then they were gone.
I put all of my dance gear back into my dance bag and pulled off my dance paws before slipping into my slides. I zipped the bag and plugged my earbuds into my phone before starting the walk back to my house. I had a wide range of songs playing through the small speakers in my ears and I was beginning to get lost in thought as I made the very familiar walk home.
Elliot Voss is Deliah's brother. They are so different. She's so sweet and such a good girl. She always offers to stay and help Ms. Mack clean the studio, or helps me teach the younger girls. Usually her dad picks her up from practice, I wonder why he was there today.
Elliot Voss. Star quarterback. Totally cliche. Always seen with a different girl everyday. I don't really know that much about him, all I really know is that he's a troublemaker. At least that's what everyone claims.
Oh, and he's hot. Like incredibly hot. He has light brown hair that he keeps longer on top and it always looks so soft. The eyes. The beautiful gray eyes, that I had never noticed before today. I have honestly never really been that close to him. He's a beautiful boy, and I am totally attracted to him.
Not that anything would ever happen. He's way out of my league. I am a nobody. I am worthless. I have nothing going for me, and I'm ugly. At least that's what I have been told for as long as I can remember.
I walked up to my door and pulled out my key to unlock it. When I got inside I went straight up to my room and dropped my dance bag. I pulled out my earbuds and grabbed what I needed to take a shower.
I hopped in and did what was necessary, making sure not to take too much time. I wanted to get to bed at a decent time since I have to deal with him tomorrow.
I quickly finished what I was doing and got out of the shower drying off and putting on my pajama shorts and tank top. I laid down in bed and pulled out my phone to see if I had any notifications.
I had two friend requests on Facebook and a text. I went to the text to see that it's from my best friend.
Vanna:
Hey girly! How was dance?
Me:
It went well, I finally nailed Human
I told her referring to the dance I was working on. Savannah is a dancer too, but she does belly dancing. I do pretty much everything, but belly dancing.
I went to Facebook to see who sent me the requests.
Mark Lasiter
and...
Elliot Voss?
What? Why would they add me? How did they even find me? Maybe Deliah told them who I was, because I know they would have no idea who I was otherwise. Do I accept? Is it a big deal? Why am I thinking about this so much?
I pressed accept on both requests before I could overthink it anymore than I already was and laid my phone down. I decided I had a long enough day and closed my eyes slowly drifting off to a dreamless sleep.
