Mason's POV:
Groaning, I rolled my sore neck around to loosen it up. Chains jingled as I tried to pull my hand up to rub the sore spot where the needle went in. Blinking, my eyes adjusted to the dim lighting. Looking down at my wrists I followed the cuffs to the chain attached to the floor.
Well ain't that lovely.
The room was empty enough to match the dark and dim nature of it. The floor felt chilly to the touch, sending a shiver down my spine. Home sweet home.
"Stay behind me my ass. Look where that got us, Smitty." I shook my head, feeling grimy and dirty on the floor. Speaking of which, where was the son of a bitch?
Not spotting him, I took in the room. There was a single door leading into the cement room and a single window where I could see grass popping up next to it. This had to be in the basement. Bars over the window made it feel all too much like a homemade prison.
Good thing I'm not claustrophobic.
Testing the chain strength I tugged at them. I honestly had nothing else more productive to do. Thank the good Lord Almighty the bag wasn't still on my head. My experience was far from enjoyable, but being able to see nothing would have made it a lot more miserable.
A clanging sound drew my attention toward the door. I listened to a lock clicking, dreading who would be coming in from the other side. With a tug the door pulled open, creaking on its hinges. I could imagine Smitty making some smartass comment about it needing to be oiled up.
Forcing my breathing to remain calm, I waited for the door to open all the way. Realizing I was still laying down, I pulled myself up to my knees the best that I could. I had no desire to be kneeling in front of these bastards, but it was better than laying on my back looking like an invalid.
A chain jingling on the other side of the door peaked my interest.
"Come on!" A rough voice barked as the door finally flung open.
I had no saliva left in my mouth to swallow; instead my dry mouth seemed to stick together more. I kept my face as somber as possible as Smitty was tugged into the room like an animal. His shirt was no longer on, replaced by bruises, blood, and sweat. He walked with a slight limp. His eye was nearly swollen shut.
Two guards with guns followed behind as one thicker set man tugged him over to me. He barely gave me a glance as he fastened Smitty's chain to the same loop on the ground as mine. Without a word the man and the guards left the room, closing the door and locking it from the outside.
"Well that was impersonal." I commented dryly, turning my focus on Smitty.
"Be glad." He scoffed, leaning on his hip for support. Spitting out a glob of blood and saliva, he glanced over at me. "Anything personal from them results in a world of pain."
"I'm seeing that." I eyed up the cuts and blood covering most of his exposed skin.
"Yeah, well, when you start a war things are more personal." He lowered himself slowly to his back, gently laying his head on the cool cement. "Don't worry though, they only brought you along for a bargaining chip. I doubt you'll have as much to worry about."
His attempt at positivity didn't do much to ease my bunching nerves. "I think the least I can do is take some of the pain away from whatever the hell you're feeling right now."
