Mason's POV:
A sharp stinging sensation across my legs pulled me out of my dreams of Harper. I wished I were waking up to her. Instead, I woke up to the angry face of a guard I didn't recognize holding some kind of police baton of sorts. My scalp burned as he snatched my hair and twisted my head to an unnatural angle.
"It's time to move, pretty boy." He sneered, looking like he enjoyed his position way more than he should.
Glaring, I refused to avert my gaze as I pulled myself to my feet, carefully keeping my head aligned under his grip to slow the painful burn. Releasing my hair with a shove, he snatched my chain and tugged.
"Where are we going?" I looked back, the space empty. "Where's Smitty?"
"You ask too many fucking questions." He growled, tugging me nearly off balance.
"Maybe I wouldn't ask so many questions if I was given some honest answers." I grumbled, attempting to keep up with my captor.
Twisting around, the guard threw his fist into my mouth. "Maybe you should just learn to keep your mouth shut!"
Stumbling back, the taut chain kept me from falling. Salty blood filled my mouth as my glare met his. Spitting out the blood, I stood straight, my head lowering just enough to make me feel dangerous. Honestly I was past just a feeling at this point. I was all ready evaluating what my next moves should be.
There were two of them and they were both bigger than me. All it would take though was a battle of wits to bring them down. I had to be smarter. More cunning.
I had to be the hunter, not the prey.
I recalled the bible stories my mother would read me as a child. David brought down a towering Goliath with a stone. Daniel slept with lions in peace. Samson killed a powerful group of men with an ass's jaw. Why couldn't I have the same strength? Surely God could grant me that when I was in the midst of murders, thieves, and adulterers.
Glancing up at the ceiling, I let the thoughts fill my mind that I felt needed to be spoken to God if he were listening. I'm not your most loyal follower, but could really use some help right about now, big guy.
Thoughts of Ricci's man with my knife sticking out of his neck filled my thoughts. Maybe God couldn't help me.
Glancing back at the guard following closely behind me, I looked back at the guard now ignoring me as he tugged me along with some form of entertainment. Sliding the back of my arm over my bloody mouth, I relaxed my shoulders. A cool breeze sent a shiver down my spine. I wasn't sure if it was fresh air coming from an opening or just the dungeon being frigid and unwelcoming. Either way it didn't much matter unless I could escape, then knowing where the opening was could either be life or death.
Swallowing hard, I tried not to wince as my feet stumbled over bits and pieces of gravel and dirt. I hadn't noticed my shoes missing, I'd been too focused on escaping or surviving or getting answers. Brows furrowed, I looked back at my captors. "Where the fuck is my shoes?"
The guard behind me chuckled. "Funny story---"
I threw my elbow back into his face, tugging the guard in front of me back. I barely had time to think about what I was doing, my body just seemed to take over. Wrapping the chain around the guard's throat, I twisted him around to be able to see what the other guard was doing.
Tightening the grip around the struggling guard, I clenched my teeth together. "I want my fucking shoes back!"
"Whoa now, buddy." The other guard held up a hand, his other hand cradling his bleeding nose. "You don't know what you're doing right now."
