"I was driving."
"What?" We had just finished plucking out all the grass and weeds surrounding the graves of both my father and brother when Dian spoke up.
I took a seat on my father's polished marble tombstone before patting the space beside me, Dian took a hesitant seat and rubbed the heels of his hands into his eyes.
"When the accident happened, I was driving the car."
I frowned when I heard him sniffle, "baby, talk to me, what happened?"
When he finally lifted his eyes the dust and sand from cleaning up had smudged all over his face, I used my fingers to wipe the dirt away and kissed his cheeks.
"You don't have to tell me anything until you are ready, okay?""But I want to, I mean you shared all of this with me, " he said referring to my family.
I was about to tell him that my opening up to him wasn't meant to guilt him into talking about his dad but he beat me to the punch. " We had just gone out to celebrate my learners and when we came back we were driving on a bridge and it was packed, there was barely any space to move the car, I had begged my father to let driver since I had just gotten my learner's licence and he let me. He kept telling me 'keep your hands on the steering wheel, always check your mirrors'. And I did, I did everything he told me but that taxi just came out of nowhere. Next thing I knew the car was flying off the bridge and crashing into several other cars... I still remember him hanging upside down, the seatbelt looked like it was choking him, but he was already dead, countless open wounds with blood gushing out of them." I quickly wrapped him up in my arms and he cried into my shoulder.
I can't imagine something like that happening to anyone, seeing your own father die like that.
He pulled back from me and wiped his eyes with his sleeve, " I tried to wake him up, over and over again but nothing and then there was the screaming, the lady whose car we had toppled over was screaming for her daughter but the little girl wasn't moving. My body was pumped with so much adrenaline that I didn't even feel the pressure of the airbag fracture my arm or the seatbelt rip through my shirt and scar my chest even the pain of the glass that sliced up my face didn't even register. Everything was bloodied, and people were screaming, people from the taxi, from different cars around us but you know the funny thing is, the taxi driver survived." He said with a chuckle full of malice.
I kissed both his zygomatic bones in an attempt to wipe off his tears. And he clasped both of my cheeks and pressed his lips against mine and I felt the warmth of his tears pour down his cheeks and onto mine. He didn't move them just kept them pressed on mine.
After a while, he pulled back and chuckled while wiping his tears," that was depressing."
I nodded with a soft smile, "yeah it was."
"Can we get some kotas I haven't had one in forever?" He asked.
I nodded with a chuckle. I wasn't sweeping anything under the rug by allowing him to stray away from the topic, there was nothing to be said. I couldn't say sorry because it was pointless, my apology won't bring back that little girl or Dian's father but me just simply listening can remove so much weight.
