"I want to apologise for the whole drama with Buhle, I wasn't being fair and should have minded my own business," I said earnestly. Kg and I were walking side by side heading home, the sky had darkened and was a mix between purple and dark blue the temperature had also dropped and the wind felt a bit chilly.
I played with edges of my braids while I waited for a response.
"I love her, you know." He said thoughtfully.
"Yeah, I saw you two together, what you have is sweet." He bit his lips shyly to stop a smile from appearing on his face so I chuckled softly and bumped him playfully using my shoulder.
"I'm sorry about Ma and the Dian fiasco, I mean that boy has balls to talk to your mother like that I thought her coloured side was going to come out." We both laughed softly. My mother was a generally soft-spoken person because she was constantly tired and had no energy to argue but then there were times where her father's side just roars out, they say I got my no-nonsense attitude from him, even though I don't remember him.
The streets were still bustling with the street lights lighting up the path for the many people who were still walking around. The vendors had shut down and packed up for the night the only thing that was left was the skeleton of their stalls.
"Aye, Kg, ntwana, I heard about Lesedi jo, jammer man." A guy said, he broke off from his group of friends the moment he saw Kg.
"Sho ntwana." Kgotatso reached out and shook the man's hand then bumped their shoulders together and gave him a light pat on his back.
"I'll keep my ear to the ground and make sure my guys know about this, if anything pops up, I'll let you know."
"Dankie ntwana I appreciate that big time." Kg nodded towards the man and continued on the path.
"Kg, do you know who did it?" I asked after releasing a deep breath.
"If I knew who did it, we would be having a different conversation right now and Lesedi would be home." He was getting defensive, why, I don't know. It was either because he felt like I was accusing him or he felt disappointed in himself or he actually knew who had her.
"Well, can't you ask for help from the police you were working with?"
He grabbed me by my arm and lowered himself to my height, "don't you ever talk about that, okay. The wrong people will hear you and we will all end up dead. Do you understand me?" I nodded and pried his hand away but I got distracted by a black SUV that was slowing down in the middle of the road until it stopped right in front of us.
Kg let go and turned towards the vehicle. The black tinted window on the passenger side was rolled down and Big John's face was revealed.
His skin was still as dark as night and the scar on his face made him seem just as gnarly as he did when he wrapped his hands around my throat.
He was wearing a stripped beige suit from what I could tell, a cigarette between his black lips. He took it out of his mouth and blew out some smoke.
"Kgotatso." He greeted with a nod.
"Boss." Kg greeted back, he clasped his hands in front of himself and paid full attention to his boss.
"Nana nice time." He eyed me like I was a meal and I could see it was getting on Kg's nerve, the muscle in his jaw was twitching but other than that he kept his cool.
I chose to say nothing and Big J chuckled then drew a large puff from the cigarette, "I heard about your sister." My eyes snapped to him, there was something about the way he said it like he knew something we didn't and that definitely put me on edge. "It's unfortunate especially since Kg is practically your brother and he is my second in command, anyone who disrespects him, disrespects me and I wanted you to know that you can use the gang's resources to find your sister." He said earnestly, it sounded as if he was seriously bothered that someone would dare disrespect his gang like that.
