The hospital didn't allow champagne. Which is fine in my book, but Thomas was not feeling it. He said he'd never celebrated a new year without champagne and he'd be dammed if this was the first.
Well, it was going to be. He settled for the sparkling cider, after much groaning, complaining, and almost throwing hands with a nurse.
Along with the cider, we had a wide variety of potato chips, pretzels, and cornbread provided by Thomas' mom, Jane, who had visited the day before. Mrs. Jefferson was cool, she seemed to like me, and that's all that really mattered. She trusted me with Thomas.
So, anyway, we were sitting on the hospital floor (on a blanket, of course) eating snacks and watching the broadcast from New York; one hour until 2019.
"Oooo, Maria wants to talk. She's hiding in the bathroom so she can talk."
"Okay," I said, "call her."
It only rang once before she answered. She was on speaker.
"Hey, bitches."
"Yo."
"Hello, Maria."
"Okay, so basically, Roni took me to this overly fancy New Year's party, right? And I promised this bitch I'd kiss her at midnight... but we're in public... and I like her, like a lot, but... I don't even know. What should I do?" Maria ranted.
"Kiss her," Thomas said.
That seemed like the reasonable answer.
"Yeah, but-"
"But, what? It's New Year's Eve, everyone else will be busy kissing, drinking, or passed out to notice one small kiss between the two of you."
"You're right, as always. Anyways, gotta go, get better soon, talk to you later, bye." She hung up.
"She is such a useless lesbian," Thomas muttered.
I nodded. I got to thinking if Thomas would kiss me at midnight. Would or should I kiss him?
30 minutes until 2019.
"I hope I get out of here before we're off of break."
"You will. I know you will," I replied.
"You have a lot of faith in my respiratory system."
I laughed.
"If I don't, you'll go back to school, right? My mom will come down and take care of me." He stared at me.
"I..." I wanted to stay with him.
"James... promise me."
"I can't promise you that."
"James, you fucking idiot, promise me."
What. The. Hell.
I didn't say anything.
"I'm not that important. Not important enough for you to skip out on your education."
"Yes, you are. You're that important to me."
Instead of him looking like he cared, he rolled his eyes. "James, stop."
I stood up. "Why do you think I'm here if I didn't care? Huh?"
"I don't deserve you to care that much..." he was quiet. He wouldn't look at me.
10 minutes until 2019.
"You... don't say that. Thomas, I l- I love-"
"Don't you dare finish that-"
I felt my face flush, in the worst way possible. An anger and a sadness rose up through my chest and came pouring out.
