You Can't Outrun The Past

"Are you okay?"

I didn't answer, I just kept crying into my pillow.

"James..." I heard Samuel slip from the top bunk, his feet landing silently.

I felt like shit.

I hadn't gotten a wink of sleep and it was 5 a.m. I had only started crying two hours before.

There was pressure at the foot my bed; Samuel sitting down.

"What happened?"

I just groaned.

"Did someone die?"

I brought myself slightly together, sitting up, rubbing at my wet face.

"No. No one died," I mumbled.

"Then what is it?"

"Why do you care?"

I couldn't see his reaction but I heard him take a harsh inhale.

"Because... I just do."

"Before winter break, you were a bitch to me. What happened? Why the sudden change?"

"I... uh... reasons. It's okay if you don't tell me. I just want to help."

"We broke up."

"Oh."

"For real. It's completely over and it's all my fucking fault."

"I doubt that."

"How would you know?" I face-planted back into the pillow.

"Because you're not like that."

I ignored him. It wasn't his business.

He sat there for a while. I didn't know how long.

There was a furious rapping at the door.

That's when he moved.

"Hi! Um... I heard depressing crying and brought over icecream." It was one of the Schuyler sisters. I was still crying so I couldn't pinpoint which one.

"Thanks. Uh, any breakup tips?" Samuel asked.

"Oh, so that's what it is. Just let him take his time. Breakups suck. Did he end it? Or..?"

I didn't hear a response.

"Well, best of luck to him."

"Thanks."

The door closed.

"Icecream?"

I sat up once again, nodding.

Samuel handed the pint to me, before rummaging around in the cabinets. "Aha! Here's a spoon."

He handed me a pink plastic spoon.

At one point he must've turned on the lights.

I popped open the lid to the coffee-flavored icecream. It tasted like actual shit but I didn't really care.

My phone went off.

I went to reach for it but Samuel stopped me by putting his hand over mine.

"It's probably nothing important. Take this moment for you."

I rolled my eyes, wiping my eyes, and stood up.

"I'm going on a walk. I'll be back later." I unplugged my phone from my charger.

I sat the icecream on the coffee table, grabbed my sweater, and left.

I check my phone as soon as I was out in the hallway.
