"12 days! I have to stay off of campus for 12 class days! It's ridiculous! I was just trying to stop the fight!" Thomas threw his hands in the air.
"Tom, you just need to relax. Take a breath." Maria slid onto the table top.
I stood awkwardly in front of the door.
"Plus," she added, "Just be glad; Hamilton got expelled and he still has to pay for all of it."
"Well fuck him!"
"What were you even doing?"
"Alex full on tackled Seabury and I tried to pull him off."
"When did this happen?" Maria asked.
"Last night. At like two."
"Jesus Christ." She stood up. "I actually think it's good you're getting punishment... your actions do have consequences."
"You're not being fair. Look, James was there too. What's your punishment?" He turned to me.
Well...
How was I supposed to say this?
"I don't know yet," I lied through my teeth for the first time in probably forever.
Did Thomas deserve me to lie to him?
I had no fucking idea.
"Headmaster hasn't called you down yet?"
I shook my head. "Nope..."
"Wait, wait, wait," Maria interrupted, "You were a part of it too?"
"Uh... yeah."
"Y'all are idiots." She shook her head in disbelief. "You can figure this out yourselves, I've got more important things to deal with."
I moved out of her way.
"Ria... wait-" Thomas said.
"Nah, I'm gone." And with that; she left, closing the door behind her.
I turned back to Thomas, who was wringing his hands through his hair.
He abruptly stopped when he caught my gaze.
"So..."
"So what?" I said.
"What's going on between us?"
"I don't know..." That wasn't a lie.
"Are... are we still a thing?"
"What do you think?" It came out harsher than intended. I immediately regretted it.
"James?" His face was unreadable.
I didn't say anything.
Fuck.
What the fuck was I supposed to say?
"I'm sorry... it wasn't-"
"It's fine," I said, "save your excuses. I think we should maybe take some time for ourselves."
"For how long?"
Shit.
How long?
"Well, it seems reasonable... once you get back."
He slowly nodded.
"Okay. We'll talk as soon as I get back, right?"
"Yeah."
He looked at me through his hair, a slight smile on his face.
"Okay. Okay. That sounds okay. I can do that."
"Right." I turned the doorknob. "Bye, Thomas."
"Bye."
What. The. Actual. Fuck...?????
Now, with the door separating us, I felt the waterworks come.
I swear that's not how I wanted that to go. Why did I act like that? What was wrong with me?
"I'm sorry," I said, quietly, to myself.
Maria was sitting in the hallway, her phone in her hand paused on a game of Candy Crush.
"What happened, boo?"
"What're you still doing here?"
"Eh." She shrugged her shoulders. "Y'all's vibes were off today. I figured something might go south so I decided to stick around."
"Oh."
"Nah, it's fine, you don't have to talk to me. Why don't you go tell your tumblr, tho?"
Oh shit.
"You know about that?"
"Uh yeah." She must've seen something on my face. "Don't worry, I haven't told anyone."
I slid down the wall to sit next to her.
"You talk about Thomas a lot on there and if you really care about him that much, then, I'd work through this rough patch."
"Okay, but how?"
"I like to do my research on who my best friend is dating."
Leave it to Maria to get be in a slightly better mood.
"Stalker," I muttered.
She did an overly dramatic gasp.
"I call it devoted."
"Potato, potat-"
Eep
Eep
Eep
The harsh tones echoed through the hallway.
The fire alarm.
//oop this was short... sorry... not sorry. Hurry go quick and look at my messages board. 👀👀
