"Sorry, I didn't know it was going to be closed..."
"Oh no, it's fine. Anywhere else you want to go?" I turned towards him.
His nose and cheeks were red from the cold.
"We can go to my aunts' place. That's where I'm staying."
"Sounds good to me."
It was only a couple of blocks away. I never knew he had family so close. It hurt that there were still things we didn't about each other.
"They're in Vegas but said it was chill if I crashed while I'm suspended. I also didn't want to tell my mother..."
"That's understandable."
"So what was your punishment?"
"Hmm?"
We walked up the stairs of the apartment building.
"For the fight?"
"Oh." I slipped my mind that I told Thomas I hadn't known the other day. "None."
He chuckled. "Of course."
"What is that supposed to mean?"
"Nothing, it's just... that's so you. Never getting into any trouble."
"Hey, I could get into trouble if I wanted."
"Oh really?" He smirked as he slid the key into the doorknob.
I could hear footsteps on the stairs behind us.
"James...?" Someone asked.
I turned.
It was Samuel's sister, Abigail. Crazy how I kept running into her.
"Abby, right?"
"Yeah." She smiled. "Glad you remembered."
"You guys know each other?" Thomas asked, his hand still on the doorknob.
"Uh yeah. Abigail this my... Thomas. And Thomas this is Samuel Seabury's sister."
"Enchante." Abigail held out her hand.
"Pleasure." Thomas ignored it.
Who pissed in his cheerios?
"So... Sammy told me what happened last night and let me say--"
I gave her a look of warning. Oh god, she better shut her mouth.
"...that I'm glad you guys finally beat that stupid little video game." She scrunched her face up like people do when they talk to babies.
"Yeah." I forced a laugh.
"Well, I should be going. Got things to do, you know? Bye, now." She kept on up the stairs.
"She's..."
"Weird. I know." I wiped my sweaty palms on my pants as calmly as possible as if I hadn't just had a panic attack.
Thomas opened the door.
"What was all that about anyway?"
Had he caught on to something?
"What do you mean?" I innocently asked.
"Why did she awkwardly change the subject?" He was kind of sorta laughing, but not really. "What really happened last night?"
I gazed around the apartment like I was fascinated. All my alarms were blaring.
"Hmm?" I looked at Thomas as he raised his eyebrows. "What happened?"
The apartment was small, and everything was in the open, except for a bathroom. There was a couch, a tv, a bed, and a kitchenette.
