LEENA POV

The next few days i spent planning and gathering supplies for the journey ahead. As much as i wanted to rush out the door immediately and begin my search for my sister, I had to be smart or i would not last out there in the wild.

I hunted copious amounts of meat. I dried and cured them to last. And i left most for my mother. I didn't know how long i would be gone or if i would even make it back. This new life was unpredictable. I would leave her with enough to last her a while, at least a month or so if she rationed smart.

I saved the rest for myself and my journey. Unlike her I could hunt when it ran out. 3 days later i was ready and eager. Every day Nina was gone my anxiety and fear for her grew.

I hugged my mother goodbye as she still looked out of it. I packed all i thought i would need and walked out the cabin. I worried briefly about my mothers well being but told myself she was grown woman who could take care of herself. My 16 yr old sister however could not, she needed me more.

I jogged to the forest that was most dense and with the most vegetation. Hopefully it would aid in keeping me hidden. Being out in the open was a sure death sentence.

I had no clear direction i was headed. I had heard rumors as we all did of facilities where they took The Plagued. but couldn't be sure if they were false or not. My best bet was to hope i came upon a plagued person and  wait near them until they were taken.

Then i could follow. So for now i would head in the rumored direction and survive while i bide my time.

Out here in the wild there are 4 main dangers to worry about.

Other humans looking to harm you, Wild animals looking to eat and attack you, The Plagued looking to infect you and of course Outsiders, who knows what they may do if they found you, i most certainty didn't want to find out. So i traveled during the day and climbed a tree to sleep at night.

the first day was the hardest. I missed my bed and the sounds of the forest were disconcerting especially at night. I ate sparingly for energy but almost immediately began missing the homemade soups i could make there.

Charred unseasoned meat and dried meat was my constant meal but i wouldn't complain at least i was fed. I didn't dare make a fire at night for fear someone would see and find me. So i cooked all my meat during the day and immediately put it out  and  destroyed any evidence of a fire when i was done.

i was also grateful for the weather. it was fall and the weather was pleasant, although a little chilly at night nothing i couldn't handle. had it been spring with all the rain, summer with the stifling heat or winter. i shuddered with dread. This was Minnesota winters were dreadful.

The 3rd day i came across an outsider two in fact. Again they seemed to be searching for something. I hid low to the ground holding my breathe fear slithered over me like a snake. I don't know how long i laid there daring not to breathe before they moved on. I fled to a nearby tree for the remainder of the day too shaken to move. Xui had always been the only Outsider i didn't fear.

I wondered what they were looking for and why they were free to wander our forest. Outsiders were supposed to be locked away and under guard. The government said after the invasion they had subdued them and corralled them into a government guarded facility where they were allowed to live but not interact with us or roam around.

Just another thing i'm sure the government lied to us about. those Outsiders were definitely roaming.

The 7th day i had a nasty run in with a wild boar that tried to kill me and almost did had i not heard a startled squawk behind me. A bird surprised by the boar alerted me he was there ready to charge at me.

My arrow met his eye and had meals for 3 days in a row.

the 10th day nearly 2 weeks on my journey i finally found my opportunity.

I found a plagued woman not too far gone. She looked starved to half death and disoriented.

I climbed a nearby tree and watched her waiting for the militia to appear and take her away.

It took 2 full days of stalking her before she was finally found. The militia truck pulled up waking me form my nap above the same tree the plagued woman leaned on slumbering.

Immediately i was alert. I watched as they picked the woman up. heavy, thick suits and gas masks on their faces. she didn't stir as they moved her and i wondered if she was just that tired, unconscious or dead. I climbed down silently and waited.

Once they secured her in the back of they their vehicle, in a box looking thing attached to the back they took off.

They drove fast, faster than i could keep up but i wasn't concerned. I was a skilled hunter i knew how to follow tracks and they left 2 clear lines of bent grass showing exactly where they were going.

As long as it didn't rain i would find them.

I'm coming Nina i thought as i jogged down the trail towards my sister and the unknown................................................

What do you think Leena will find at the facility for the Plague?

What do you think about the roaming Outsiders is the gov lying to the people?

What do you think the Outsiders are looking for in the woods?
