LEENA POV
I sat in that tree for what felt like days. I sat in it long after the people went back inside the facility, long after the sun had set, even long after they switched guard duty.twice.
My mind kept trying to make sense of what I just saw. I was confused and a little bereft. Those people weren't sick they looked happy and healthy. My sister had been smiling. I hadn't seen her smile in years. She looked so content I wondered all day if maybe I should just turn around and go home. At this point she might not even want to come back home.
The thought angered and saddened me. We were sisters. we had been all eachother had after dad died and mom was never the same. She became more withdrawn every passing day. sometimes she goes days without moving or speaking. Nina and I would take care of eachother. We said it'd be us to the end. Now those words felt hollow. SHe wasn't crying for my loss or feeling homesick. How could she be happy when I was miserable, lonely and worried sick about her?. Did she forget about me and our vow so easily?
I pondered over this all day. Debating what i should do when I heard a faint sound coming from the facility. A light banging. I looked towards the guards tower to see if they had heard it too. they hadn't. I suspect the tower was too high up.
The sound came a gain slightly louder. I looked down and watched stunned as a boy emerged from underneath the wall I had been next to earlier. A vent at the base of the wall had been bent and peeled away. He crawled silently until he got to the edge of the woods. Then he shot to his feet and took off into the forest.
An idea struck me and I quickly climbed down the tree to follow him.
It didn't take long for me to catch up. Just following him for 15 minutes it was painfully obvious he not only didn't know where he was going but he had no concept of the dangers that lurked here especially at night. He hadn't even heard me following him. He wouldn't last out here very long..
He stopped suddenly ,spun around and sneered at me. He took a fighting stance staring at me with vicious blue eyes.
"Why are you following me?" he spat
i moved toward him but stopped when he growled in warning
Don't come any closer, i'm not going back.
I raised my hands in surrender. I wasn't trying to fight him and he looked a little unhinged
"I'm trying to help you I have a proposition for you". I told him calmly
He scoffed turning back around.
"I don't want to hear anything you gotta say girl".
"Are you sure?" I asked his back as I stepped closer. These woods are not safe".
"I'll take my chances".
just then his stomach growled loudly. I pulled out meat from my back and handed it to him. He looked at it, then me distrust and suspicion in his eyes.
He took it hesitantly before devouring it quickly.
I just stared as he ate it all like a starving man. On closer inspection I realized he wasn't a boy at all. he was young but he looked to be a few years older than me. His blonde hair was cut short and his face had sharp features. A strong nose and jawline that held a few days stubble.
"Thanks" he said begrudgingly licking his fingers.
"No problem, will you at least hear me out now?"
He opened his mouth to deny me again but sighed heavily and said "fine make it quick".
I walked with him to a more secluded spot In the woods that had a little more protection. He had been running out in the open forest. Which is a huge no no unless your want to serve yourself up on a platter for all those that lurked in the darkness.
