LEENA POV
A WEEK LATER
Spending time in the LoQuans facility was an overwhelming experience. Between the LoQuans staring at me as if i were a odd creature and the biting jabs Lokkar's father threw at him constantly, i was ready to go mad
Even worse, Lokkar's cousin Azi, had begun flirting and ogling Xui openly as me being with him was irrelevant. She blatantly ignored any conversation with me and made it a point to not even look at me. As if she ignored my presence id simply disappear
It had become clear after the very first day that something significant had transpired between the two. Xui felt visibly uncomfortable when she spoke or looked at him and it seemed her uncle Lokkars father made it a point to make sure she was around wherever Xui went.
Throughout all this i never doubted Xui's affection nor devotion. he made it a point to be excessively affectionate and doting. He insisted we sleep in the same bed each night and he shadowed my every move. It was apparent that he was trying very hard to assuage any doubt or ill feelings i harbored. and i loved him all the more for it. Yet even with all he was doing, he refused to elaborate on his and Azi's previous relationship, insisting they were just friends.
As the days passed the tension seemed to increase whenever Xui and i went
it was obvious his people disapproved of us and i often wondered how long he could ignore their opposition. I didn't want to be the one who held him back.
He might have been wiling to ignore it all but i wasn't. I realized that i may have to be the one who did the right thing for us all
********************************************
We sat at yet another breakfast where all the important members of the TurQua tribe shared their mela everyday since we arrived. As usual Xui sat on my right side and Azi sat on his right
Her hand touched him too much for my liking whilst she prattled on and on about inconsequential things. Fed up with the lack of information regarding their situation I leaned over to Slix who sat to my left. He seemed unbothered by all the strain that currently sat with us at the overcrowded table.
He ate heartily, ignoring everyone. The flirting, the snide comments the sounds of chewing even the simpering LoQuans females tables away who stared at him like a savory treat; Their delicate horns were adorned with glittering jewelry meant to attract a male.
Azi wore hers overly decorated. As it to flaunt how wealthy she was. I despised her all the more because of it. Here humans were practically starving, living in abandoned homes and struggling to clothe ourselves properly and this female is flouncing around in fancy gowns and wearing expensive jewels on every visible surface of her skin
"Slix, what is the deal with the Azi girl were Xui and her a couple.?"
Slix froze mid chew. He swallowed hard forcing his food down. Was he nervous to answer me. Immediately i felt apprehension consume me and suddenly i wasn't sure i wanted to know the answer.
He sat silent for intensely long moments. The conversation around us continued on and Azi still kept Xui engaged in idle chat as i waited for Slix to answer me. I knew he would, he swore allegiance to me. He now had the same amount of loyalty to me as he did for Xui
"She...They..had a dalliance briefly in our youth." Was all he said while he kept his eyes on his plate and pushed his food around.
"There is more to it than that Slix. She seems completely unafraid to touch him inappropriately. that speaks of intimacy. deep intimacy.
He let out a tired sigh before facing me
"Xui...thought himself in..love with her once...She was his first...."
I gasped causing all eyes to snap to me with curiosity
I smiled awkwardly and resumed eating although now the food had lost its flavorful appeal
Xui had been in love before. I had thought i was the only one he ever loved. How foolish of me. I couldn't even be upset about it. But i could be upset about the fact that he chose to keep something that significant from me and that he couldn't stop her from her consistent advances
the rest of the meal i avoided looking or talking to anyone. I stewed in my own thoughts and the doubts once again began to creep in.
I tried to remind myself that we were only to be here for another few days and then she would no longer be around.
****************************************************************
That night as i walked back to our shared room from their communal bathing chambers, i stilled as i heard whispered shouting
"No Azi there will never again be an us. You need to understand and cease what you are doing. Disrespecting my bonded touching me. It must stop"
Isntantly i recongnized Xuis voice the urge to reveal myself and ask why he was along with this woman when he told me he was in a late night discussion with her uncle.
"She is not yet your bonded and you cannot pretend we were never together . We would have been together even now, if your father had not chosen that dreadful female instead. You promised you would always love me" she pleaded I could almost see the pout she sported with her words
Xui sighed with exhaustion
"I was young Azi. I thought i needed to love a LoQuan to appease my father and uphold my duty. But i had only always loved Leena"
Azi scoffed in outrage
"She is a human Xui. She doesn't belong in our world. She is beneath you. Our people will never accept her. She will ruin all you are hoping to achieve. They would follow your father before they ever tolerate an Human LoQuan pairing" she spat
" When i take down my father they will have no choice. I have no desire to turn into a tyrant ruler as my father has become but if anyone dares harm or attempt to destroy my union with Leena they will feel my wrath and i will show no Mercy." Xui declared fiercely in a tone I've never heard before
I sprinted away quickly as I heard footsteps approaching
Inhaling deeply i ruminated over everything i had overheard.
My heat soared at the determination in Xui's words. In that moment never had i loved and appreciated someone so deeply. But i couldn't, i wouldn't allow Xui to fail because of me. Not only for the rebellion, Xui needed to win his people over for the sake of their future. For LoQuans futures everywhere. He had a grand destiny and it seemed more and more lately like although our paths crossed briefly in our youth it was not meant to transfer into a future together.
Xui did not notice when he made his speeches to his people or when he eagerly kissed and hugged me that although his people adored him they sneered at our relationship whenever his back was turned.
I decided then that i would have to let Xui go. for the greater good. for his future that i had no place in, I only hoped that someday he would forgive me for having to break his heart....................................
What do you think of the LoQuans disdain for Xui and Leena?
Do you think she should break it off with Xui for his own good?
