The "Plagued"Facility

LEENA POV

I walked for what felt like hours on the trail the militia left behind. The trail was still fresh and even though i was desperate to run it, I forced myself to remain calm. Being too eager and hasty would make me sloppy and if that happens this journey is over before it officially began.

My words proved all the more  true when I inadvertently stumbled upon a group of humans. They were gathered around a large fire. There were 3 males and 2 females. they spoke amongst themselves not incredibly loud but not quiet either. They looked healthy so I could only assume one reason they could be out here, scavenging or hunting.

I froze in my tracks unsure what i should do. i couldn't climb a tree unless i moved further away from them. They most definitely would hear me, unfortunately its not possible to be quiet when climbing a tree.

the silence of the forest didn't help any. where are the animal sounds when you need them? hell even some gusty winds shaking the leaves around would be helpful. And what's worst was sundown was on the horizon; soon i would be plunged into darkness and wouldn't be able to see shit.

I needed to find safety and fast.

I decided to get on my belly and crawled as silently as i could stopping every time i heard a sound. I twisted my neck ever so often making sure all 5 were still there at that fire.

I was doing great until my boot dragged across a stick and cracked it a little. the sound wasn't loud but it might as well been. All 5 heads snapped towards me at once. I froze.

My heart immediately picked up speed and i could hear the pounding so loud in my ears. My hands shook as i continued on, slow and silent hoping they would think nothing of it. i could hear them talking as i moved across the ground.

"Did ya'll hear that"

"Yea" the other male said monotone

"Is someone there!" one of the girls called out

"Shhhhhhhh, dont do that jenna you are alerting people to exactly where we are" he scolded

"Sorry i didn't know do i look like a nature freak" she spat with attitude

The guy scoffed "no you look like a bratty spoiled bitch, news flash babe this nature shit is the real world now get used to it. shopping and makeup is all past, got it"

"Fuck you, Nate" she sneered

"Alright enough" the other girl said.

"It was probably just a small animal. Look I'll go check if it will make you feel better babe". one of the males said

I froze again terrified he was gonna come my way and discover me but luck was with me when the whiny chick stopped him.

"No! babe dont leave me" her voice sounded annoying even to me

I exhaled quietly in relief and kept crawling i was almost far away enough to be safe.

"Stop coddling her GEEZ this is the way things are she needs to get use to it already, its been almost 10 years since the outsiders came" 

"Shut up Nate! you dont have to be such a dick!" he snapped

"Whatever man I'm going to take a piss" he said dismissivewly

I heard foot steps and tensed as I listened for the direction he was going, thankfully he walked the opposite way.

I continued my crawling as fast and quiet as i could until finally i was a good distance away. i could only vaguely hear their voices. I quickly stood up and climbed the nearest tree.

As i sat on the branch I pulled out a dried piece of meat and chewed thoughtfully. i knew i couldn't have kept walking through the night but i hated the idea of just sitting here all night. what is something happened to the trail while i slept? i wasn't even tired.

 i was so close to Nina adrenaline was fueling me. Admittedly i knew i needed the extra rest to be at my best. there was no telling what i would find at that facility and i needed to be 100%.I just hoped that by morning the group will have moved on I would have to pass them to continue on the trail.

Morning

I snapped awake at dawn. I eagerly scrambled down the tree and began walking back toward the trail. The group was still there snuggled asleep in their sleeping bags. I shook my head at them. Its dangerous to sleep on the ground a number of terrible dangers lurked in these woods.

 They were either stupid or very brave. Of course their is safety in numbers. but honestly the two chicks seemed to be more of a liability than anything else. Whatever it wasn't my problem i thought as I crept silently past them. Soon I was jogging along the path making good time.

It was barely midday before i finally knew i was close. A large gray building loomed in the distance. I watched my surroundings keenly as i walked ever closer. A militia post or guard watch had to be around the closer i got. I couldn't be seen

I immediately noticed two in a tower on my left and right a few feet from the building entrance. they had rifles and sniper guns and large spotlights attached to the walls. 2 more were around the back. I cursed inwardly. I had no idea how i would get inside or get Nina out. But I'd be damned if i didn't try. I noticed a group of cars like the one that took the plagued woman parked near the tower. as I snuck around to the side of the building which seemed to be the only part slightly unwatched.

 I plastered myself tight against the wall. My heart started hammering in anticipation. I was finally here. i was so close.

I heard voices from the other side of the wall. A chorus of voices actually. I needed to get higher and look at what i was dealing with, then i could formulate a plan.

I rushed back into the woods and climbed a tall tree. i went up each branch until i was high enough, Higher than i usually went.

I was so lucky the tree was close to the wall, it was the perfect way to scope out the place.

Instantly i saw a large courtyard open with picnic tables around it. the wall didn't have fencing, Noted. i shook my head of course they didn't who the hell would willingly break into a facility for The Plagued.

Um you my conscience said and yup sadly thats true.

Suddenly people poured into the courtyard startling me briefly

They ran and laughed. A couple were kisisng in the corner. another group were laughing and drinking something at the tables. Two boys played catch and other girls were jumping rope.

I was astounded. Was this the right place? These people weren't infected. If i didn't see the cars in the front i actually might have thought i was in the wrong place. What the hell was going on?

then a young girl ran up to the girls jumping rope and took over. She popped her gum as she twirled the rope, a smile on her face. My heart stilled with equal dread and happiness.
