I stood next to the punch table, alone, watching Alex Eliza as they made their way onto the dance floor, and started to slow dance. I watched as Alex put his hands on her hips. I watched as they both leaned in and their lips met. Despite wanting to look away, my eyes were glued on them.
"You're John, I'm guessing?"
I turned around to see a girl with dark hair, skin and eyes. She wore a pink dress, with a poofy skirt. She looked like the type of girl my dad would try and set me up with. I mean, she's pretty, but not my type. She looks familiar. It's hard to tell with the mask.
"Who are you?" I asked the girl, curiously.
"My name is Angelica Schyler."
Oh! She's Eliza's sister!
"John. John Laurens. Well, actually, apparently you already know that..." I trailed off, rubbing the back of my neck. This is embarrassing.
But thankfully, she laughed. "Yeah, Alex talks about you a lot."
I felt my face turn read. "O-oh." I took a sip of the punch. It tasted like feet, but it gave me something to do with my hands, instead of fidgeting around.
"Yeah, I know you like him." She said smirking at me.
I spit out my drink.
How does she know?! Is she mad?!
"I have no idea what your talking about.." I said, wiping the lunch off my face.
"You've been staring at him all night."
I sighed. "Is it that obvious?"
"Yeah, you're not very good at hiding it..."
"So, what? Are you going to tell him, or your sister?" I felt panic rise in my chest.
"No way! I just wanted to let you know that I understand what your feeling."
I looked at her confused. "You like him too?"
She shrugged. "Just a small crush. But, my sisters happy with him. That's all that matters."
I nodded. I know what if feels like to sacrifice your happiness for your siblings.
"Want to be friends?"
I looked over at her. She wants to be my friend, even though I like her sister's boyfriend?
"Why?"
She sighed. "I'm tired of all the fake popular people, like Jefferson. I want some real friends for once. So... friends?"
I nodded. "Friends."
"Well, since we're friends now, it's my job to make sure you have fun. So get off your ass. You're meeting my sister."
"Eliza? I've already met her." I said confused.
She laughed. "My other sister. Come on!"
She grabbed my hand and dragged me to the bleachers, towards a girl wearing a yellow flower dress. "This is the third Schyler sister."
"Hi! I'm Peggy!"
"I'm John." I said, smiling.
"Are you the guy that Alex talks about?" She asked. I felt my cheeks turn bright red.
"I g-guess so."
She grinned. "I ship it."
Angelica elbowed her. "He's dating our sister!" She scolded.
"Oops..?"
I laughed slightly. "You should meet Laf."
"Baguette guy? From math class?"
I laughed at his nickname. "I'm definitely calling him that for now on."
"Anyway, I'm bored! This dance is boringgg!" Peggy exclaimed, as a new song came on. This one was upbeat.
"You two should go dance." Angelica said, meaning Peggy and I.
We both broke out laughing.
"I'm serious!" Angelica said, crossing her arms. "Go have fun!"
Peggy shrugged. "Okay then, lets go!"
She put her hand out for me to grab.
"Er... b-but I-" I started to object. I don't want to lead her on, or anything.
"Don't worry man, I'm gay as fuck."
I broke out laughing. "Alright then."
I grabbed her hand as she dragged me into the dance floor. We both danced, laughed, and had a fun time.
Despite this, I still felt my eyes pulled towards Alex. And Eliza.
Even though I may not get over him, at least I have a distraction.
And that's enough.
