*John's POV*
I have been falling for hours and hours into darkness. Nothing but pitch black.
Is this what death feels like?
I couldn't feel the wind in my arms and hair. I couldn't tell if I was actually falling, or just staying still in nothingness.
I wanted to scream, but it seemed like my voice didn't work. There was no sound.
Nothing.
I was about to give up hope, as I continued to look around. My eyes landed on whatever was below me.
It looked like water.
I fell towards the water, landing on my back. It stung, but I slowly got up. Although the ground looked like water, I could stand on it.
"Hello?!" I called out, my voice working for the first time since I've gotten here.
"Hello John." I heard a southern voice say from behind me. I jumped, and turned around.
All the air seemed to leave my lungs. My knees turned to jello.
"M-mom?" I asked, staring at my mother. She looked the same as she did a few years ago, with her long, wavy blonde hair, and bright smile.
I ran towards her, half expecting to go through her, like a ghost. But shockingly, she was there. I could feel her warmth as she hugged me back.
"Now, John, I'm afraid we don't have much time."
"What do you mean? What's going on?"
"I'm so sorry, honey..." My mom said, cupping my cheek. "I've missed you so much."
"I've missed you too... but what's happening? I-I'm scared." I said, admitting it mostly to myself.
"That is understandable." My mother said, grabbing my hand. I squeezed it for reassurance, wrapping my fingers with hers.
"John, my time is up. But yours doesn't have to be." She said, smiling sadly at me.
"What does that mean?"
"Jacky... you're dying."
I stared at her in shock. "I am?"
"Yes dear, I'm so sorry." She said, running her hand through my hair. "But you don't have to die."
"W-what?"
"You have a choice. You can go back to your siblings, and your friends, your family. Or you can stay with me."
I felt my eyes fill with tears. "B-but I don't want to leave you! Come back with me!"
She smiled sadly. "I can't do that, you know that..."
"Do you want me to stay?"
"It's not my choice..."
"Please answer my question, mom."
"I've missed you, honey, but no... I don't want you to stay. I want you to live a long, happy life." She said, hugging me. I sobbed into her chest.
"I can't just leave you!"
"Yes, you can."
I pulled away from the hug.
"So, what's your decision?"
