I sipped my coffee one last time before setting it down on the table. I looked at my watch and it was 3 in the afternoon. I have been here for almost an hour now and I needed to get something from the library. I gathered my book and phone from the table and slid them in my bag. When I was sure that I didn't forget anything I made my way out of Starbucks.
When I was a couple of meters away from the coffee shop, my phone rang. I quickly got it from my bag and positioned it on my ear.
"Hello Kenny." I said to the other person on the line while smiling. I heard him grumble from the other line. I chuckled at his childlike reaction.
"How did you know it was me? I even changed my number." He complained.
"I got a feeling that it was you."
"It was just luck. Okay, I know you're near Starbucks right now. Can you get me an espresso. I'll pay you later. Thank you Jul." He got off the line even before I could respond. I looked at the screen and shook my head. He's really addicted with espresso. I don't even know why.
I made my way back to Starbucks and bought his order. I smiled at the guy behind the counter when he handed me my order. I made my way out of the shop the second time and fished for my phone and earphones. I was still looking in my bag that I didn't notice another person was walking straight into me.
"Woah, that was close." He almost collided with me but thankfully he moved fast. I looked shyly at him and apologized. He just waved it off with a smile and continued on his way. I finally found my phone and connected my earphones to my ears. I clicked the play button on my phone. Even after these past years, I still love Kpop. I started to walk towards the library.
Once I arrived there, I immediately spotted Kenny sitting on a chair with a book on his hand. He was reading and seemed to be in his own world. I slowly crept behind him and when I thought I could successfully scare him, he held out his hand.
"My espresso please." I frowned and handed him his order. I sat on the other side while frowning.
"How did you know it was me?" I asked him.
"I guess the same way you knew that I was the one calling you. It could probably be a cousin thing, for all I know." He laughed at his own answer and I laughed with him. Kenny is my cousin and he has been here in Los Angeles for more than half of his life. He was born in the Philippines but moved here with tita and tito when he was seven.
"Kailan pala ang balik mo?" I spoke in our mother language. I was still fluent in Tagalog even if I've already lived here in Los Angeles for three years now.
"Sa sabado. Sinabihan ko nga si Mama na magtatagal ako pero malapit na ang enrollment para sa next sem." Kenny is still fluent in Tagalog even when he stayed here longer. I nodded my head and faced him.
