I wake up around noon. I get up and get dressed. I wait for Josh. He told me held come to pick me up but no time was confirmed. I wait on the porch and whistle with the birds. Josh pulls up and honks the horn over and over and over.
"I'm coming!" I shout at him. He smiles and unlocks the doors. I get in.
"Good morning." He says with a grin.
"Why so happy?" I ask buckling my seat belt.
"Because. Don't I have every right?" He says. "It's a free country."
"Come yourself, Mr. politics." I say. We drive off and talk about nonsense. We reach his house and get off the car.
"Where is Avan?" I ask. Avan had became one of my best friends other than Josh.
"He's planning for the party tomorrow." Josh says annoyed. He takes me into the kitchen and opens the fridge.
"Parties are fun!" I say.
"Sure...the last time you got a hickey by some pig." He reminds me. "You don't have to come." He doesn't want me there?
"Why do you say that," I reply. He hands me a glass of orange juice.
"I don't even want to come." Hey looking down at his glass. "You know what? We should ditch the party. The two of us should go off and do something together."
I smile and think about it. "No, I like parties. And Max won't be here."
"I wouldn't doubt if he comes," Josh says blowing off the conversation. "Come with me. I have something to show you." Josh says leading me to the family room. It's the room that one goes in. A room only used for special occasions. It's pure white. A classic piano sits in the corner.
"You said you knew how to play the piano. We never even touch it at all. It just sits here." Josh says. Walking over and sitting on the piano bench. He pats the seat next to him. I sit down and stroke the black and white keys. The piano is beautifully crafted. He sit back and stare at it unsure I should play it.
"Come on. Play it." He smiles and takes my hand and places it on the keys. I start to play simple notes. I start to play the intro of one of my favorite songs. "Somewhere Only We Know" by Keane.
Josh starts to sing,
"I walked across an empty land
I knew the pathway like the back of my hand
I felt the earth beneath my feet
I sat by the river and it made me complete" I start to sing with him as I play the piano.
"Oh simple thing, where have you gone
I'm getting old and I need something to rely on
So tell me when, you're going to let me in
I'm getting tired and I need somewhere to begin." He stops singing and stares at me. I play the keys right on cue...
"I came across a fallen tree
I felt the branches of it looking at me
Is this the place we used to love
Is this the place that I've been dreaming of." I sing alone. I turn to him and nod. We sing together.
"Oh simple thing, where have you gone
I'm getting old and I need something to rely on
So tell me when, you're going to let me in
I'm getting tired and I need somewhere to begin
And if you have a minute, why don't we go
Talk about it somewhere only we know
This could be the end of everything
So why don't go somewhere only we know, somewhere only we know" I stop and focus on the keys. So Josh sings.
"Oh simple thing, where have you gone
I'm getting old and I need something to rely on." He nudges me and I sing the next line.
"So tell me when, you're going to let me in
I'm getting tired and I need somewhere to begin." He joins me once again.
"And if you have a minute, why don't we go
Talk about it somewhere only we know
This could be the end of everything
So why don't go somewhere only we know, somewhere only we know
Somewhere only we know." We stop singing and I finish the notes with a complicated note.
"Amazing just amazing. Your voice." Josh praise me.
"No no. Your voice is great." I counter.
"I'm horrible." He says laughing. "I could never play the piano like that. I don't think anyone has heard that piano play any music." I don't know how to answer. I just stare into his hazel eyes. He leans in and we kiss. There was something different about the kiss. It made me want another one. He puts his hands around my waist and pulls me closer. I place my hands around his neck. It made my body warm and chills all over. I pull way when I feel awkward. Connor stands by the stairs, looking shocked. Josh, still holding my waist, lets go and looks at Connor angrily. Connor runs back up stairs mad. I stare back down at the keys. I start to play random notes.
"Sorry about that." Josh says to me.
"No it's fine." I reply. I want to kiss him once more. I clench my fist resisting the urge.
"I love you." Josh say holding my hand trying to look into my eyes. I look away.
"Awesome." I reply. WHAT THE HELL! WHY DID I SAY THAT! I wish I could take it back. He lets my hand go slowly and he gets up.
"Forget what I said. I'm sorry." He says nervously putting his hands in his pockets.
"No no. It's not that." I reply looking at the drapes. I just could tell him everyone I love always finds a way to leave me alone and hurt. It wasn't that I didn't love him, it's that I did.
"Okay. It's getting late do you want a ride home." He asks rubbing his neck. He's kicking me out. I can take a hint.
"No, I'll just walk home." I say getting up grabbing my bag.
"Walk fast it's getting late." He tells me walking away to the kitchen. I wanted him to reject my offer and tell me other wise. I wanted him to walk me home.
I close the door quietly and leave. I should have told him I loved him back. But I couldn't, I could lose him. I didn't want that to happen ad it did with the others.
