Nose to the grindstone

" First, put this on," Violet said, handing Jack a silver metal belt with a single button on it.

Jack did as she told.

" Good, try not to fall," Violet said, pressing a button on her phone.

Jack saw metal spring from the belt and coat his body until it covered everything but his head.

" Cool! It's like instant armor!" Jack exclaimed, examining himself.

" What you have on is known as an " Armor Belt". But I wouldn't be smiling if I were you," Violet told Jack, showing him her phone screen. On it was a screen that said "AB" with a counter on it that read zero.

" W-what does that do?"

" Why don't we find out?" Violet asked, putting the counter at one.

Jack instantly felt his suit grow heavier.

" How's that?"

" Not bad, actually."

" My bad," Violet replied, punching the number in at one thousand.

Jack felt like a boulder had been dropped on him.

" Fuck! Shut it off! Shut it off!" He screamed.

" You better find a way to stand or I'll have it crush you."

Jack strained with all his might, nearly bursting a few vessels in his effort but managed to stand.

" Now, I want one hundred laps around the base."

" With this thing on?! That's impossible!"

Violet turned the counter up by one.

" Ow! Fuck! Okay, just turn it back down, please!"

Violet complied then Jack got to work. He was just barely able to move, only managing to walk a few feet.

" I want to see some running, recruit."

Jack cursed in his head then started making long strides. He knew this didn't actually count as running but it was enough to please Violet and for that he was grateful.

Once Jack was out of sight, he was able to reach into his pack and pull out a potion. It was the sight potion he drank. When he did, he felt the weight of his armor vanish.

Violet found it odd that Jack didn't seem as fatigued as someone would normally be. Who was going through this kind of training. And after he had run for an hour, she called him over.

" Yes, Admiral?"

" I couldn't help but notice the remarkable progress you've made. Not even an hour ago, you were barely able to walk in the armor you're wearing. And now, you somehow were able to run laps around the base without much of a problem, Why is that?" She asked, leaning down towards Jack.

" I guess I just got used to it," He replied, sweating some.

" You are a horrible liar," Violet said, then snatched his pack off his back.

" Hey!" Jack protested as she pawed through it and pulled out an empty potion bottle.

" So, you thought you could get away with this?"

" I'm sorry! I just wanted to make things easier!"

" No shortcuts," She said, showing Jack the counter.

" No! Please!" Jack begged.

" Relax, I won't add too much more weight to your armor," Violet, told him as she added ten to the counter.
