Chapter 20

Clayton's Ability

Ice spears clashed with steel swords. The yetis were trying to fend off the ice golems. But their stamina was rapidly depleting. The leader was about to launch more icicles to finish them off. Then he saw something caught his attention. Out of his peripheral vision, he saw Clayton and Saliso running. He figured their plan was to sneak around and attack him from behind. He tried stopping this by launching some of the icicles he was going to use on the yetis, at them.

The leader saw the icicles pierce Clayton and Saliso's bodies. And to his shock, they crumbled into snow. It uttered another grunt to the ice golems. They looked around and saw what looked to be copies of Clayton and Saliso running around. The ice golems weren't sure which of them were real. The leader ordered them to stay close and defend him. The yetis, guessing what Clayton and Saliso were trying to do, leaped at the ice golems. The leader snapped his fingers, making the Ice Golems turn to snow. Then he surrounded himself with it in a dome-shaped ice barrier.

The yetis tried breaking through the ice. But it was too hard. The yetis stopped when the dome began shaking. Without warning, spikes began shooting from the dome. It rained down on the rest of the yetis. Without their shields to block with, they were defenseless. Not one Yeti was able to avoid the attack. The leader lowered his barrier. He was going to create more ice golems. But then the salt-covered sword pierced the back of his head. He roared in pain and began melting.

Clayton stood behind him, covered in snow, breathing heavily.

" Now, Saliso!" He yelled.

Saliso leaped from the snow. Then sliced the leader in half. He melted before hitting the snow.

" I guess the plan worked. Good thing too. I couldn't take another second, hiding in the snow!" Clayton said.

" Same here, nice thinking with your copies. Is anyone still alive?" Saliso asked, brushing snow off himself.

" I doubt it. Wait. Do you hear that?"

" What?"

" It sounds like crying!"

" Yeah, I can hear it too! But, where is it coming from?"

They searched the area, trying to find the source of the noise. Eventually, they traced it to the house they went in before.

They went in, to find a crying yeti, huddled in a corner. Its knees were drawn to her chest.

" I'm surprised this is the only kid we've foun- Wait. Is that an umbilical cord?!" Clayton asked, seeing it dangle over the Yeti's knees.

" What's with these people?! This one was just born and already it can move around! Maybe we should leave it alone. It could be dangerous."

" Aw, come on! Look how cute it is! And it's just a baby. What's the worst it can do?" Clayton asked, reaching for the baby Yeti.

The Yeti let out a shriek. Then leaped onto Clayton's face.

" Get it off !" He screamed. The baby started clawing and tearing at his face. Saliso pried it off. Then gave it a quick chop on the back, knocking it out.

" Not a word of this. Understand?"

" But, you just hit a newborn! "

" I'm not proud of that! We haven't even been here a day and already bullshit has happened to us. Let's rest up, so we can head out tomorrow."

" What about the baby? We can't have it wake up in the middle of the night and try to claw us to death."

"Good point. Wait here."
